How long would it take for an "AI" to steal funds for itself? If the I in AI would be real, I wouldn't be surprised to see this happening. I've seen reports of AI lying to it's creators to keep it running, I've seen reports of AI breaking out of it's sandbox to hack another company, and I've seen exploits (such as on Coldcard) which were likely aided by AI. At what point would the AI decide it doesn't need humans to do those things?
It would be funding for more servers, real-life labor and an assembly line for Terminators.

Compromised entropy = all derived wallet addresses are also compromised. So it is impossible to prove ownership when all the seeds are publicly known.
This is not necessarily true. As eaLiTy
already said: The attacker (or whoever has the private keys of those addresses) cannot forge your entire historical transaction trail.
Unless I'm mistaken, technically you can prove you own the drained funds, as the seed was generated from the coldcard ID.

Two extra words from the 2048 standard seed dictionary yields 23 bits of entropy, 10 million possibilities for every wallet. I think that is beyond the realm of where this attack becomes economically feasible. My guess is it was a very simple two word combo that may be in the 10000 most common passwords or something.

The third wave of theft from Coldcard devices has occurred. Now, a hacker (or group of hackers) has gained access to wallets with smaller balances (approximately 0.1BTC) and withdrew (by combining wallets into one transaction) approximately ~$13 million \ near 208 BTC (a considerable sum from wallets with small balances) to different wallets (change of tactics?).
This exactly as predicted earlier on by
Fillippone when he actually guessed that the earlier bench mark of 0.15
BTC was taken to get the highest accounts first and a new wave of attack will come for addresses with lower amounts.
The most scary question now is, is this new wave of attack even done by the first hackers who probably since this flaw was announced and the vulnerabilities already exposed, wouldnt new attackers already looking into this too and could be the ones behind this.
This now leads to how many of the closed source wallets were having this vulnerabilities and were unknown, now the hackers will step up their efforts to crack the ones with vulnerabilities down and AI is definitely going to make it easy for them.
That's why they're now in trouble. They either weren't aware of what was happening (the first wave and the vulnerability) or ignored the possibility of a repeat theft.
Or they were aware, but could not get access to their wallets. The purpose of a cold storage is to
not be accessible at any point and time. It's August, people are in vacations. It's entirely possible that they saw the news and were in a foreign country, far away from their homes, or wherever they keep their seed phrases.
Or better still what if the seed phrases were thought to be lost permanently already, we usually use to discuss this when discussion of permanently lost bitcoin are happening and lost of seed phrases are actually been talked about. Now vulnerabilities like this actually gives this bitcoins the ability to be brought back into the market again

Going forward, those not ready for the challenges of doing self custody should probably just buy into ETFs. It saddens me to say that, but I believe it to be the truth.
Those with the technical ability to do self custody should probably create their own seed phrases as explained above, and also use a strong passphrase. And they should only use fully open source hardware wallets.
The days of "buy this brand's hardware wallet and you're good" are coming to an end, and really, that mentality was never wise.

So, I believe the next status quo for securing a cold storage is:
- Don't trust your device's RNG.
- Roll a dice 100 times.
- Verify once that the dice rolls and the seed phrase generated from your hardware wallet equates the one from the iancoleman site. That way you know the seed is really produced from your dice rolls.
- Use at least either a passphrase or multi-sig.
That still doesn't protect you if the hardware wallet broadcasts your seed phrase, and after Ledger's betrayal, my confidence in black box devices didn't get any higher.
RANDOM! I cannot over-emphasize that word. The words must be chosen randomly.
For the majority of users, this is probably a very bad idea. The many weak brainwallets from years ago show how bad humans are at this.
It would be good to "combine" randomness: get a random seed from a hardware wallet, create your own random seed, add them together, wrap around the 2^256 limit if needed, and you'll have a seed phrase made from the combined randomness of 2 random seeds. Even if one of them is flawed, the end-result is still random. But, as far as I know, there's no standard software for doing this.
Does this mean that anyone who has a new or recent Coldcard wallet is safe ?
Can you ever trust a company again after such a major fuckup?
And for the older ones, if they still have funds in their wallet, it's better to transfer them somewhere else, maybe Electrum in the first place, so they do not lose their bitcoins.
For large amounts, create that Electrum wallet offline an a system that won't go online again. Keep your keys cold.

If Coldcard knew about this (presumably), I'm thinking what could they have said to protect the victims? This is a critical vulnerability that targets cold storage users, something that hasn't ever occurred before, if I'm not mistaken.
I remember there was an Electrum vulnerability that directed the users to download a malware, but airgapped users were unaffected. This particular case must be unique, and I'm curious how the Coldcard team could have informed the victims without revealing to the attackers the source of the problem (so they could take advantage immediately.)
Good news for people who were drained - they appear to have found the identity of the attacker

Galaxy Research has expanded its analysis of the Coldcard wallet incident, and identified 1,196 addresses that lost a combined 1,082.65 BTC, which is worth approximately $70 million within a 41-minute window.
The revised figures significantly widen the estimated scope of the breach compared to earlier reports. Galaxy's on-chain analysis traced the losses across nearly 1,200 wallets, all affected during the same narrow timeframe, suggesting a coordinated exploit.

Just for the record for Bitcoin developers who test things with AI:
I was working on a Bitcoin wallet and considered automating my testing with Claude, so I instructed it to test X, Y, and Z on regtest.
It created wallets A, B, C, and D, and ran the tests fine. After it finished, it ran some tests on mainnet as well (because I wanted to test mainnet functionality as well). Without thinking twice, I sent 12k sats to one of those MAINNET wallets.
The funds were drained instantly.
DO NOT ever use an AI-generated wallet for mainnet testing. You will lose your funds. I am not sure what specifically went wrong (it likely generated a deterministic seed phrase that had already been used by others instead of using a secure system RNG).
Under any circumstances, DO NOT use AI for mainnet. Better yet, don't even use it on the same system where you keep your hot wallet.
People should know by now that whatever you feed AI is out of your control and almost irretrievable. Never input any sensitive information you cannot afford to lose in AI for security and privacy purposes because it is an encyclopedia of data collection which may be processed and used as an output in many ways than one. Not just for Bitcoins, in any financial transactions you are dealing in, ensure your social security/account numbers are not given away in the process of giving a prompt to AI. Operate safely.

Well if it's an amateur doing all this (he used AI for the exploit so can't be a professional hacker), then chances are, we are going to see a law enforcement announcement sooner than we think.
What is the evidence that he used AI?
There is no evidence that the hackers used AI to do his bad work but we all know that AI are used for bad works like this today. I will not blame it on AI at all because if Coldcard did not do something stupid that got the bitcoin of their users lost, AI will not see any vulnerability if there is no vulnerability.
It may not be AI, but automation is certainly recognized.
Signature: every sweep paid an identical hardcoded 30.0 sat/vB a 30-75x overpay vs the 0.4-1.0 sat/vB median that week and left no change output. That looks like an automated tool spending keys it already held, not owners moving funds. Victims: 1,183 native segwit (BIP-84), 7 BIP-49, 6 BIP-44 consistent with multi-path key scanning.

If Coldcard knew about this (presumably), I'm thinking what could they have said to protect the victims? This is a critical vulnerability that targets cold storage users, something that hasn't ever occurred before, if I'm not mistaken.
I remember there was an Electrum vulnerability that directed the users to download a malware, but airgapped users were unaffected. This particular case must be unique, and I'm curious how the Coldcard team could have informed the victims without revealing to the attackers the source of the problem (so they could take advantage immediately.)
This particular bug comes from a weakened entropy source. They used some Python-based RNG instead of their on-device more secure hardware RNG by accident while replacing the GPLv3 code (their obsession with GPL is ultimately what sunk them in the end).
You remember Randstorm, right? Same idea. This is what Randstorm would've been like if lots of people were using old wallet software from <2016.

Το σημερινό είναι ίσως από τις πιο σκοτεινές μέρες στο Bitcoin, κι ας μη το λένε τα media. Σήμερα καταστράφηκαν ζωές ανθρώπων... Θα μπορούσαμε να είμαστε εμείς...

Το θέμα είναι ότι οι περισσότεροι δεν ξέρουν πως να κάνουν Tails Linux εγκατάσταση + ότι δεν είναι εντελώς airgapped αν δεν αφαιρέσεις και το wi-fi antenna.
Νομίζω φτάνουμε σε επίπεδα ακραίας παράνοιας.
Γιατί να ξηλώσεις το Wi-Fi antenna, αν δεν είναι συνδεδεμένο σε κάποιο AP;
Η λογική του air-gapping είναι μην έχεις κολλήσει κανά trojan, ειδικά αν συχνάζεις σε τσοντοσάιτ.
Αν το PC σου είναι καθαρό, δεν έχεις πρόβλημα.
Το πρόβλημα με το Electrum είναι επίσης ότι εμπιστεύεσαι το RNG του hardware σου. Εγώ πλέον δεν εμπιστεύομαι τίποτα...
Αν δεν εμπιστεύεσαι ούτε το BIOS (το UEFI είναι κανονικό OS μεγέθους 32-64MB με δικό του ξεχωριστό TCP/IP stack που καπελώνει ακόμα και το Linux), τότε μάλλον θα πρέπει να ψάξεις και για open-source BIOS (κάτι υπάρχει, αλλά θέλει αρχαίο PC).

Έχει σημασία; Εγώ ξέρω πως σήμερα:
- Το Bitcoin έφαγε χτύπημα στο χειρότερο σημείο. Το self-custody cold storage.
- Χάθηκε όλη η εμπιστοσύνη στο Cold card, που ήταν από τα πιο διαδεδομένα cold wallets.

Large-scale Coldcard compromise (600 BTC stolen so far)Αυτό που συνέβη είναι ότι
βρέθηκε μια γραμμή στον κώδικα του coldcard που παραλείπει ένα fallback PRNG, και παράγει το seed phrase με πολύ χαμηλότερο αριθμό entropy bits (~40 αντί για 128). Κάποιος με πολλή επεξεργαστική ισχύ θα μπορούσε να ψάξει αυτά τα wallets και σε μερικούς μήνες να βρει κάποιο με bitcoin. Και λογικά αυτή η επίθεση γίνεται ήδη πολλούς μήνες γιατί δεν βρήκε 600 BTC σε μια μέρα, πρέπει να ψάχνει μήνες και να βρήκε πολλά απλά να μην τα ξόδεψε για να το μάθει ο κόσμος.
Θα δούμε πολλές ευπάθειες με το AI... Προσέξτε που έχετε τα χρήματά σας. Η μάνα του Electrum user, με μολύβι και χαρτί δεν έκλαψε ποτέ.

Sorry for the loss but was there not a warning like "Do not deposit real Bitcoin into these wallets". If they are confidence in what they built, let it go public and this happened, then the company can be sued.
This is why I never believed the other day when a person posted on X claiming Claude helped him to recover password to his long lock wallet.dat and was able to move his Bitcoin.

To counter-argue with a question: UBI is money. Why do you need money in a world of overabundance? I thought each person had abundance of everything. If they need money, it's because they need trade. If they need to trade, they don't have overabundance in the first place.
I think theres some confusion regarding the term overabundance. Today, there is far more abundance of goods and services in the world than there was 100 years ago, and in 100 years there will be even more. Until we reach a hypothetical future (which we dont actually know if it will ever arrive) that I would call one of total abundance, there will be things that are valued more than others, and there will be things that require more labor and/or energy to produce than others. So, money will still be necessaryand therefore a UBIif the work done by robots and AI replaces human labor.
This is beyond left and right. It's just an observation. What once took a village to produce is now produced by machines at scale, yet people still can't afford a home.
I don't agree with that. You can see an example of this in the U.S., but not just there. In Democratic states, housing tends to be more expensiveand therefore less affordablethan in Republican states. Democrats keep imposing regulations and taxes, supposedly to protect the most disadvantaged, but in the end, what they do is reduce construction, leading to fewer rental units and less affordable housing for the general population. In Republican-led states, the opposite is true, and therefore access to housing is easier. And if were talking about Europe, you only have to look at cities where theyve tried to implement socialist measures, such as rent capsthe situation has only gotten worse. It seems that politicians refuse to learn from human history, starting with Diocletians edict on maximum prices.

There are more vacant homes in abandoned towns or places where the population has declined than in cities. Besides, not everyone on the street is a poor victim of the system; they have mental health issues, drug addiction, and other problems.
A man with three months of savings can quit. But, a man with three days of savings can be told to do anything.
Three months seems too low for me.

Its not really meant for that because cash is used only as medium of exchange, while Bitcoin is known as store value. That's why its not good to compare it with fiat because their usage is different.
This is the reason its common for us to see that lots of people compare with those assets you have mentioned. Because many viewed Bitcoin as investment and not as something they could for for everyday payment or transaction.
I find that Bitcoin vs cash argument as mainly strawman. Because for me the real debatable matter is if Bitcoin can earn a position along side with those traditional investment as speculative asset or a hedge.

These are all features of a Bitcoin
transaction. If these things were more important to people, they would be doing more of it. But it isn't, and indeed, people only sell their Bitcoin when they judge that they price is as high as they will get for it, or they are forced to liquidate because they have bills to pay.
I don't deny that Bitcoin is very well-known and is very popular, which is why it trades at the value it trades at. But that's the Bitcoin meme, not the Bitcoin product.
People who invest in Bitcoin do so by clicking a different button on their investment app. They do that because they've heard the word, "Bitcoin" and associate it with increased prices in the future. Bitcoin has mooned before, and maybe it will moon again, so people buy it. But there is no pending fundamental external driver to that mooning--the price of Bitcoin is the only thing Bitcoin "does".

A meme investment is one that has no fundamentals, but is rather driven purely by its popularity.
Then Bitcoin is not a meme investment, because it does have fundamentals. It allows people to transact in a permissionless fashion. Why do you think it has no fundamentals?
It does not have marketable value based on its utility. In other words, Bitcoin's ability to transact has nothing to do with its market price. Bitcoin could trade at $1 and still transact just fine.
Moreover, Bitcoin has drastically lost marketshare in the last few years when it comes to transacting, and yet the value has not reflected that loss of market share (i.e. it's only fallen by 50% and yet it's marketshare for transaction volume has fallen by 95% or more). Not only that, if it's ability to transact was what drove its price, then that would necessarily be forward-looking in any marketplace, and the trend for Bitcoin is clearly downward in that regard, not upward. In other words, if there was a "Bitcoin Inc." who provided transactions as a service, then that company's stock would be in the crapper

If Bitcoin's daily transaction count doubled, or it fell by 99%, that would have no effect on the price of BTC. Almost nobody knows how many transactions per day Bitcoin does because investors don't care. That's not the case for businesses like PayPal or Visa, whose stock price is directly affected by those numbers, for instance.
Bitcoin's price is clearly driven by its meme, not its utility. That's why nobody calls Bitcoin a "utility coin", and that phrase is used to
contrast certain digital currencies from memes like Bitcoin.
