1. Post 66565675 (unedited backup) (by Rockstarguy) (scraped on Tue Mar 31 12:07:08 CEST 2026) in Can emergency fund be invested in bitcoin?:
Emergency reserves and funds have some similarities, so my question is, does it make any sense for the emergency fund to be invested in Bitcoin if there has been no emergency for a long time and you think keeping it in fiat is making its value meaningless.
It would make sense to allocate a portion to bitcoin, but not all of it. While it is true that fiat is worth less day by day, bitcoin is still very volatile, for good reasons. The emergency reserves should not be able to fluctuate like 10-20% per month, and we all know bitcoin is capable of those ranges.
As an individual, however, I think your emergency funds should better bitcoin...
We understand the value of Bitcoin and the benefit of investing in Bitcoin, but looking at an emergency fund, it is something that needs to be looked at critically in order for one to decide which option will be better. Everyone is not the same; for some people, they can invest their emergency funds in Bitcoin, while for others, it is better for the emergency funds to remain untouched.
This is based on personal experience, and if an emergency does occur, it depends on whether they can easily handle it. For me, I think this is more of a personal decision that one needs to evaluate carefully and consider what the outcome will be if anything happens.

3. Post 66561906 (unedited backup) (by cryptosize) (scraped on Mon Mar 30 11:36:32 CEST 2026) in Protect your right to P2P:
What the crypto space needs urgently is a practical way to trade crypto for cash peer-to-peer. Right now, there exist some exchanges like Bisq or Peach which have the option to trade peer-to-peer for physical cash, but there's barely any liquidity there globally, let alone in your own country.
What we need is a smart solution that requires no banking institution to settle fiat and bitcoin trades. I cannot think of how this kind of trade could be settled securely, but it would allow the next levels of independence.
Something like BitTorrent, but with ratings.
Imagine meeting someone IRL, only to mug you...
ps: Seeders need to get a cut, otherwise there's no incentive to contribute your bandwidth/electricity.

Since the voting is finished and we have one more available language, I thought to post again the available remaining languages for the translations which are
finished. I did this last time
on Oct 2nd and kept that post updated with the translations which were made meanwhile. Now I only added Swedish as available too -- speaking of which, congrats Baseplate!!!

Hey Loyce, since your server is still running without any error messages, could you add blockfilterindex=1 in your bitcoin.conf and restart it?

Edit: you might need to restart with bitcoind --reindex
Done! It's currently running this:
~/bitcoin-28.0/bin/bitcoind -testnet4 -conf=/home/loyce/.bitcoin/testnet4/bitcoin.conf -reindex

Tbh, I don't think it's possible to create a "smart solution" that would serve as the trustless bridge to the physical world. It’s impossible to have a decentralized reputation layer at the protocol level because there is no way to verify if a suitcase of cash actually changed hands in the real world. Any 'reputation' system we build is just a layer of digital trust sitting on top of a physical uncertainty.
Trust and centralization work together because you need a 'referee' for the physical part of the trade. Until we can settle the fiat leg as trustlessly as the BTC leg, P2P (Bitcoin <> Cash) will always have a ceiling.

Coinjoin participants can consolidate their coins in a manner to reduce the anonymity set,
The implementation of direct payments in coinjoin makes this less of an issue, since this type of consolidation will further increase the spenders anonymity set.
while in Monero it is not possible. (There is no such thing as accidentally or purposefully consolidating a subset of the rings)
Doesn't the "shape" of a Monero transaction leak metadata about the spend? A 1 input 2 output spend implies a smaller value payment, but a tx with many inputs would stand out as likely sending a relatively large share of the origin wallet's total balance?
There are no "liquidity spikes" when a whale moves XMR.
True, Monero has advantages for large amounts.

I checked the last few forked blocks on
mempool.space, and both blocks (the active one and the replaced one) send the block reward to the same address. So it looks like someone's running multiple miners to make sure his block beats anything else.
I'll schedule restarting my Bitcoin Core tomorrow.

Am I the only one who just considers the smartphone a spyware, non-secure device that constantly surveils you and is not your friend? I see people trying to jump over GrapheneOS, under the impression they have privacy or security. These devices are just, by design, detrimental to your privacy and security.
Don't store private keys. Don't use it for anything sensitive for your life. Accept it, since it is a must-have device in the modern world, but don't depend your life on it.
Do you seriously mean I should stop my addiction of taking pictures of my penis and sending them through Meta servers to strangers?
Smart phones ARE a Spyware. The 'phone' functionality got drifted away very badly since this modern era of 'Smart' things. Nowadays a lot of people do not even text or call any more in the traditional way using a SIM card. They only use the SIM card to access Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, what ever to use in the same way we had Skype and all the other Software before.
But people lack vision lately. You see them excited to have three additional cameras on their phones, including depth sensing cameras, 500x zoom, macro, what ever. This allows supervision better than ever before with voluntary ownership. If you get your finger close enough, the macro lens will capture your finger print in detail. If you record a superb view of the sea from your hotel balcony, the 500x zoom may catch the perfect frame of a couple having sex far away from you.
Three microphones. Six cameras. Finger print under the screen. Voice recognition. 'Artificial Intelligence' built in and some times impossible to uninstall. Being unable to initialize a phone with out accepting a very intrusive Privacy Policy first. Software coded in a way that it tracks your eyes or hand movement for particular 'gestures'. Et cetera. You could easily put these in an Orwellian scenario and it would fit just right.
Not to mention back doors and such. Or Google 'Safety Core', Google that one if you want a nice surprise. Graphene OS or Red Star OS, Smart phones are definitely not the place to store things you would want Secured. I rather have a laptop with my microphones, Wi-Fi and cameras unplugged. You could arguably do this with a mobile phone too and heat the board to remove the microphones and unplug the cameras. But then did you know that speakers can act as microphones and the other way around? Did you know there are many sensors in your phone that could gather a TON of information on you even if you take speakers, microphones and cameras out.
Simplicity is much better.

99.9% of consumers actually want their tax compliance to be handled automatically so they stay out of trouble.
A lot of people are like that, indeed. But a large subset of the population does evade taxes and hold gold under the mattress. If you think all gold holders of the entire world are completely okay with reporting their purchases and sales of gold to their government, you're just delusional.
I didn't say, "all", I said almost everybody. The market for tax evasion has been around forever, but it's microscopic compared to the market for mainstream investment done above board.
If tax evaders is the audience for Bitcoin, it's an extremely small one, and one that will support a market cap of no more than a few $million, not billions and certainly not trillions.
Libertarian tax evaders are
one of the many audiences of Bitcoin. Institutional money are another audience, which is what makes the former group find bitcoin a lucrative opportunity instead of gold.
And they are by far the least significant, from the standpoint of Bitcoin's market cap.
(And I called myself "libertarian" for years and I never considered becoming a criminal nor did anybody else I know. Instead we tried to get the government to lower our taxes legally. Libertarians aren't criminals, and criminals only call themselves "libertarians" to wrap their criminality in some kind of fancy-sounding ideological wrapper. If somebody is just creating a scheme for
themselves to pay less of society's overhead burden and not trying to lower it for everybody else, they aren't "libertarian criminals", they are just plain old criminals).

I've heard of Peach, but if I'm not mistaken, it's purely for exchanging Euros and is geared for European users, so I've never bothered with it. I don't know what liquidity looks like there, but I assume it's available in any country which adopted the Euro as its national currency, and borders shouldn't be relevant to Peach trades.
Bisq is the exchange I use most frequently for exchanging cash to bitcoin and visa versa. I'm luck there're plenty of payment options and offers in my country.
Recently I was involved in a discussion about Bisq with a Russian member here and was surprised to see there were no offers for Russian Rubles despite there being options for instant transfers. I have a bank account in a Middle Eastern country, but the same issue exists. Bisq lists the local currency and instant transfer options, but there are no offers. In situations like this, we need to take it upon ourselves to be the first. It will take lots of patience, obviously, but we have to start somewhere if we're going to make P2P exchanges accessible in those countries.

Bitcoin will never stabilize as long as we're measuring it against fiat. As long as fiat exists, it will suck entropy from it, and it will grow in value indefinitely, until all fiat shitcoins are dead. And even when that happens, it will continue to not be stable, because hard money is supposed to buy you more overtime. Deflation is the natural order of things, and why we work and hold hard money.
With the hobbies of governments and central banks to print more and more fiat currencies with time, firstly their fiat currencies' purchasing powers decrease a lot over time, secondly people will look for safe heavens like gold and Bitcoin in order to keep their money safely from inflation of fiat currencies, and more than that these assets grow very well in values over time.
With Bitcoin limited supply and 20M bitcoins already mined so far, there is only 1M left for mining in many blocks till 2140 year, in the future the new demands on bitcoin will be bigger than future supply (only 1M new bitcoin in the future), and it will make price rising a lot.
Between gold and Bitcoin, Bitcoin has better potential to grow in value and price in future years.

In the US, your gains from Bitcoin (or whatever) are taxed, which is also true in many countries. Yes, you can fail to claim your gains on your tax return and not pay those taxes, but you can do that with any kind of investment.
I don't think so. I'm not in the US, but it is far more difficult for a tax authority to monitor every transaction across all banking systems and question each one to determine whether you realized your Bitcoin gains than it is with other investments, where regulated intermediaries often report directly to tax authorities.
In my place, gold coins are bought and sold, and I am very sure a large portion of those transactions and gains are not ever reported. I can imagine the same with peer-to-peer exchanges in bitcoin.
Tax evasion in the US has been happening since taxation began. Bitcoin did not invent tax evasion, and it doesn't even really make it much easier since you would need to engage in tradecraft to create fully hidden transactions if you wanted to be reasonably sure the IRS couldn't track it down.
99.9% of consumers actually
want their tax compliance to be handled automatically so they stay out of trouble.
If tax evaders is the audience for Bitcoin, it's an extremely small one, and one that will support a market cap of no more than a few $million, not billions and certainly not trillions.
Oh, and once again, this is an even worse advertisement for Bitcoin since it has a
public ledger so if you are going to use it break the law, it's simply not as good at that compared to Monero and things like it. Hence the argument, "buy Bitcoin so you can evade taxes" doesn't even hold water on its own terms.

So you are saying that you should invest in Bitcoin because... the US government might collapse into lawlessness and anarchy. Fine.
Or just because governments live off inflating the supply of money, directing people to buy assets, and then taxing the capital gains on those assets. For a puppet State that rapes kids and funds wars, breaking the law and reforming it however it fits, doesn't sound like a Science Fiction scenario either, though.
Owning Bitcoin won't solve any of those problems.
In the US, your gains from Bitcoin (or whatever) are taxed, which is also true in many countries. Yes, you can fail to claim your gains on your tax return and not pay those taxes, but you can do that with any kind of investment. In either case, you have to worry about being sent to prison for the rest of your life, which why almost nobody does it. But Bitcoin and cryptos generally don't meaningfully change the situation at all. Tax cheats existed before Bitcoin, and they'll exist after Bitcoin goes the way of MySpace too. You don't need technology to evade taxes if that's what you want to do.
But how do you explain the value Bitcoin falling when the US government gets in more trouble, say like this new war? Based on past performance, Bitcoin might be the very worst asset to hold in times of US government uncertainty. Every time there's a shock of any kind Bitcoin goes DOWN, not up.
Yes, that's called being useful in uncertain times. The fact that bitcoin plummets in war times means people in those unfortunate countries are able to sell it for their local currencies immediately, to buyers from a liquid orderbook.
ROFL. If that's the case, then there are lots of investments that go down EVEN MORE than Bitcoin does during periods of uncertainty.

Uhm, what?
Ask yourself this: what determines the consensus rules? Consensus. But what is that? Since Bitcoin is not a democracy, there is no voting for consensus rules, in the traditional sense. Someone might claim that the majority of the hashrate determines the consensus rules, but that's also incorrect, because if miners hardforked to a version of bitcoin with little demand, they'd be mining in a fork that makes them bankrupt.
What happens is this: someone proposes a change (e.g., a quantum-safe algorithm transition). At block X, the hardfork activates, and people have bitcoin at two chains. The one that survives and thrives over the long term, is the one with the support of the economic majority, which is determined by liquidity. If most people with Q-BTC sell them for the old BTC, then the old BTC remains the one that is most liquid.
Why nobody uses Bitcoin Cash? Because the economic majority sold their BCH for BTC, and because more liquidity (USD/EUR bids & asks) was directed towards Bitcoin and not Bitcoin Cash.
The protocol rules of Bitcoin Cash did not change because the economic majority chose Bitcoin. It still lives, and is worth a tiny fraction of the Bitcoin price. But if you value bitcoin as a hedge against inflation, then you value the version with the economic majority. You might believe that the Bitcoin Cash rules were "fairer" or more preferable for you, but holding BCH wouldn't have achieved the most important property of hard money, which is to protect you from inflation.
So you either follow the economic majority, or you HFSP.
What's the TL;DR?
Do you believe BlackRock will introduce a new Bitcoin fork that will capture the majority of the hashrate, all while making BTC obsolete?

"If you think tough men are dangerous, wait until you see what weak men are capable of."

It becomes both more centralized and decentralized.
- More centralized, because more bitcoin are owned by a bunch of institutional players like Strategy and Blackrock. Since consensus rules are defined by economic majority, those entities can influence the consensus significantly more than some random bitcoiner.
- More decentralized, because liquidity has gone up, and this makes it more ideal as a store of value, which makes it even more secure as network.
Uhm, what?
Since when did BTC become Proof of Stake?

Not even Satoshi himself can influence a Proof of Work coin.
21. Post 66555685 (unedited backup) (by Satofan44) (scraped on Sat Mar 28 13:21:50 CET 2026) in GET ANGRY:
If you still don't have any of these:
- Money
- Girlfriend
- House
- Peace
Most do not have at least some of them, and if they do have them they tend to be often quite shitty. Some of the people that I have met, they have some of the worst possible girlfriends and wives imaginable. In cases like this, it is better to not have something than to have a rotten version of it.

I even feel like getting angry is pointless. Gen Z is the most cornered generation out of all the other generations. We can only watch, compared to other generations who are faster at achieving their dreams. We can only accept ourselves and the circumstances that must be enough, or we will be stressed and hit by the real reality. This is why even affirmations are not enough for us, perhaps some real support for Gen Z is more effective than giving useless things.
What kind of utter nonsense is this? Gen Z and younger generations are uneducated, unskilled and mostly useless due to their extreme consumption of digital content since their earliest years. Instead of learning skills and practicing mathematics, people from this generation are watching useless streamers and other brain damaging content. Do not blame the world for your own failures, this is entirely the fault of the people themselves and their own choices. The macroeconomic situation is not as good as it used to be in certain terms, but that is simply an influencing factor that has an impact on the difficulty level and not the outcome.
I often use a technique in my life when I lack motivation, confidence, patience, or something else, I tap into anger as a source of strength. Anger can be a powerful resource for action, the key is to channel it in a productive way. For example, if things aren’t going well financially, I draw energy from anger, when you get mad at something or someone, laziness disappear and fear seems to fade away.
Anger is the solution for those that do not have better methods, but discipline remains supreme and then anger will not act as a weak source but it can come as a booster on top of the effective work that is already being done.
Going against the system, saying things out loud that the system doesn't want to hear, bro you are touching a sensitive topic but I doubt if it will put any difference. We can talk about the system as much as we want, but eventually they will be knocking our door or we will be receiving calls from them.
Most people do not live in shitholes like the UK and Iran, so nobody will actually come to "talk to you". You could not be more wrong. Many people have been red pilled with Bitcoin and against the system by their peers, they are living normal lives as if they had done nothing. The only time where you could get in trouble in a non-shithole country is if you managed to do this on a very large scale -- and let's face it, almost nobody is going to be doing that so it is not worth considering.

24. Post 66554718 (unedited backup) (by Myleschetty) (scraped on Sat Mar 28 03:11:55 CET 2026) in Forget selfies and passports – crypto should be private:
You think the people who build the cage sleep inside it?
The people who construct the cage will never sleep in it because they are aware of the risks and suffering involved, but they will choose to market their cage service as the best so that people will have faith in them. The government support them since they are helping them to do their homework in the area of tax and the more service is not obsolete the better the government use them for tax purpose.
I hope the information you provided in the OP can also be post in the beginner and help section so that newbies who believe there no need for privacy since they are not into illicit activities will know the danger in not prioritizing privacy.

26. Post 66554230 (unedited backup) (by Mia Chloe) (scraped on Fri Mar 27 23:07:02 CET 2026) in Someone detected the importance of privacy:
For someone who have spent his years buying on centralised exchanges only to have found privacy, passed countless KYC verification online, almost all their information is online, do they still have a choice at privacy?
What and what do you think they should start doing? Can such mess even get cleaned up?
First I'll reemphasize what blackhatcoiner said, which is some damages can't really be fixed. You shouldn't have too much of your data out there and suddenly want to get back to a private life. The biggest problem of this whole KYC stuff is you can't just out of the blue choose to make things different and get your data back.
If most of the KYC was done in probably things restricted to a particular region and you change regions there might be a chance for you to start afresh but it doesn't mean you'll have your data back.

With gold you are up against a few hundreds criminals within a 50 mile radius of your home. With digital goods you are exposed to millions of criminals all over the world, instantly.
Just stick with the dumb solution and buy yourself a hardware wallet.
https://www.financemagnates.com/terms/5/5-wrench-attack/if you live your life being paranoid that your investment is going to be taken away from you--and you won't accept help from any experts who do security for a living--then I can't imagine anything better than hiding some gold coins in your kitchen cookie jar.
People aren't paranoid with their money. They very knowingly evade taxes or the risk of having to pay some undeclared tax they don't even know they had to pay. That's why they'd rather have some privacy with gold coins in house than in bank vaults.
In the real world, people do evade taxes, by the way.
You can evade taxes with gold bars, too. Or rare coins. Or baseball cards. Or whatever.
Of course if you are going to risk being sent to prison for tax evasion, shouldn't you do it with a cryptocurrency that... doesn't have a public ledger like Monero? Bitcoin is the worst of both worlds.
28. Post 66554023 (unedited backup) (by Cryptomultiplier) (scraped on Fri Mar 27 22:18:25 CET 2026) in Is This Still Adoption?:
It becomes both more centralized and decentralized.
- More centralized, because more bitcoin are owned by a bunch of institutional players like Strategy and Blackrock. Since consensus rules are defined by economic majority, those entities can influence the consensus significantly more than some random bitcoiner.
- More decentralized, because liquidity has gone up, and this makes it more ideal as a store of value, which makes it even more secure as network.
If it has become both centralized and decentralized, it is definitely right to say it is hybrid.
Institutional adoption is by this time overtaken individual investors, while there also centralization of systems, but Blockchain network remains decentralized in character and design which is the security to still be enjoyed.
29. Post 66553797 (unedited backup) (by AnisEverRise) (scraped on Fri Mar 27 21:15:55 CET 2026) in Solo Mining with Solar: My QSE Experiment with a Bitaxe Stack..:
Pretty cool setup. I had thought of using solar panels to power a little rig of Bitaxes as well, but it's not as much sunny here. Also, I remember I had checked the price of the solar panels, and it was a lot cheaper to just use electricity for a couple of years instead of buying the panels and setting everything up. But, it's a cool project to learn something new.
Edit: OK, this is the first time I'm getting tricked into believing an AI generated image is a real one. Congrats for whatever tool you used and tricked me, but it is not cool to use AI without telling anyone.
Voici une version en anglais, adaptée au ton habituel des forums de minage comme Bitcointalk (où les échanges sont directs et souvent un peu techniques) :
Forum Reply Proposal
"Haha, fair enough! We’ve all been tricked by AI at least once lately. It’s becoming way too good at making things look 'cinematographic.' Honestly, I used that image because it perfectly captured the vibe of the project I'm aiming for.
To be totally transparent: my real setup is a bit more low-key' for now. I currently have two Bitaxes running, and I’ve got more on the way from eBay. It’s all tucked away discreetly in a corner of the house rather than looking like a sci-fi movie set!
But on a serious note, living in a place where we are blessed with plenty of sun makes the Solar + Wind combo more than just a hobby it’s the future. You’re right about the initial costs and the hardware investment, but for me, the Return on Investment (ROI) is the bottom line. It’s about making solo mining sustainable in the long run.
Looking forward to seeing how your setup evolves too!

Gold is much easier to detect and seize than bitcoin [...]
ROFL
So something you buy on the internet, with all of the tracking in the world watching potentially you, and watchers that hail from every corner of the Earth is "easier to detect" than something that many people own without even themselves knowing about it because it's just some metal hanging around their house somewhere... That's a good one...

With gold you are up against a few hundreds criminals within a 50 mile radius of your home. With digital goods you are exposed to millions of criminals all over the world, instantly.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not an investor in either (I'm still trying to cope with having invested in NVDA four years ago

), but if you live your life being paranoid that your investment is going to be taken away from you--and you won't accept help from any experts who do security for a living--then I can't imagine anything better than hiding some gold coins in your kitchen cookie jar.

I mean, it's still not as safe as just putting your money in a bank, statistically speaking, but it's way safer than a digital asset of any kind.
31. Post 66551784 (unedited backup) (by (BTC)) (scraped on Fri Mar 27 10:26:43 CET 2026) in Forget selfies and passports – crypto should be private:
Well, bitcoin offers a choice, be your own bank, fly your airplane by yourself
No, bitcoin does not offer the option to "fly the airplane by yourself". This just another entry in the list of the ridiculous cope he comes up with to internally justify to himself why he chose some junk stock over bitcoin.
The analogy is fundamentally flawed. Gold is much easier to detect and seize than bitcoin, yet people still buy gold coins and store them at home.
I started being a gold-hater when I became a bitcoin-enjoyer. Gold is physical. It's heavy. It can be touched and looked at by the human eye 24/7. Sure, it's got "value" because of it's use as a store of value, use in electronics, use in jewlery making, and a use as a hedge against inflation. But, shit, with my luck that meteor scientists go on and on about thats made of 80% gold is gunna strike the earth and suddenly everyone's got grill in their teeth.
Bitcoin on the other hand? I'd say my favorite aspect is the fact that it's accessible only through the posession of certain data. The data tyoically comes in the form of a private key/seed phrase, but since it's data it can be hidden, obfuscated, and stored offline in a fashion only limited by the imagination.
That, you can never beat. It's amazing and people don't realize they have an opportunity to get a meaningful amount now instead of in 20 years when they wished they had.

There is undeniably some non-reversible damage. But, it is still possible to regain some privacy by selling whatever bitcoin you bought recently from a centralized exchange, back to it, get fiat, and buy the same bitcoin from a decentralized exchange like Bisq.
This way you will have erased the history, and chain analysis tracing will stop there.
Better still if the exchange has Monero listed in it. Sell off the other coins for Monero. Move monero out in a noncustodial wallet and then off to a decentralized p2p exchange that supports monero and Bitcoin.
Exchange it for BTC that is then moved to a fresh Bitcoin address. That can help break the chain of getting traced.

It would be an interesting analogy if storing Bitcoin with third parties did not already come with a history full of victims who trusted a custodian and lost it all due to hacks and bankruptcies.
And many airliners have crashed and killed everybody on board over the years, too. But it's safer than driving yourself. It's a perfect analogy.
Well, bitcoin offers a choice, be your own bank, fly your airplane by yourself, so if I know what I am doing mean I would trust me more than anyone else in this world so if we apply the same I will be giving the best possibly security to my assets when it's under my completely control and one can access is the person who got the seeds.

You will either get what you want from life, or you die.
At least you will die for a purpose.
When you say die, I know for a reason that you know why someone would die haha. Going against the system, saying things out loud that the system doesn't want to hear, bro you are touching a sensitive topic but I doubt if it will put any difference. We can talk about the system as much as we want, but eventually they will be knocking our door or we will be receiving calls from them.
They will definitely give a few warnings, but eventually people will say you are dumb to do something like this. Others are surviving too, why can't you survive as well?
I mean bro, everyone has their purpose, like how they want to die, but the system can't be changed this way. Nah we can spread awareness and be a legal personality in the system to at least do our part.

37. Post 66549643 (unedited backup) (by Dogedegen) (scraped on Thu Mar 26 19:45:25 CET 2026) in Security Vs Convenience In Crypto:
For crypto to reach mass adoption, do we need more convenience or should the focus remain on security and self-custody?
If by "mass adoption", you mean merchants accepting it as medium-of-exchange, then it should absolutely become more convenient to use, because the competition is a debit card that pays instantly with ~0 fees and which is available to use via NFC on every phone.
Layer 2 solution is what is needed for mass adoption, but truth be told, the number one obstacle on mass adoption is the brute fact that people just don't care paying with crypto.
What do you mean with 0 fees? Because that is not correct when it comes to cards. The fees are there, they are just hidden from the user so they are much different than a transaction fee in Bitcoin so you can't really compare it like that. You are right when it comes to the usability aspect, but we need to be more detailed when making statements about security and usability and what the competition is. Firstly, one must separate the topic into 2 big groupings.
1. Storage and investments.
2. Payments, with emphasis on smaller payments.
When it comes to the first group, there should definitely be no sacrifices to security in favor of usability. Most people are obsessed with this usability thing, but they at the same time are wasting a lot of time with daily activities. Inefficient ways of doing things. So who needs these efficiency gains from this trade? Nobody really needs them and we must stop justifying this behavior. Security must be absolute and should never be sacrificed for anything. We have had so many hacks that could have been avoided if people behaved more reasonably and in a smart way. Most people do not need to store any Bitcoin at all on exchanges or others platforms.
When it comes to the second group, we do need to make the tradeoff for many reasons. I do not mind doing something more risky like using a lightning wallet on my phone or even one where it is custodial, but the point there is that at most I am risking a couple hundred dollars. In the worst possible case, it won't bother me at all. It is like if someone stole $300 in cash from my wallet. It is a bad thing, but I can completely ignore it and go about my day. When it comes to the competitors, we must make it clear that with LN you can get the best possible experience already for smaller payments. I have never had an issue with LN when it comes to small amounts and the other side also received the payment instantly. It is as close as it gets to the tap with your card experience I believe. What else is there to improve about that?
Mostly merchants are not aware of how great the LN experience is, they don't know how to install it or adopt it, and there may also be some issues relating to convertibility to fiat for those that need to do that. I think accepting Bitcoin with LN should be standard, because I don't need to convert a small percentage of my sales to fiat all the time. Realistically how much is it going to be? 1% of my sales volume or even less for the average merchant? Why bother with converting to fiat at all?

Most people don't like the idea of physically guarding their own life savings, which is why banks were invented.
Victims of the Executive Order 6102 would disagree with the idea that the government holding your gold coins is safer than self-custody.
There's a chance history repeats, and people with bitcoin ETFs and IOUs end up financial hostages. I know, it is a crazy conspiracy theory I read on the Internet by some lunatics who also believe the democratically elected governments are actually puppet States of some higher power structure.
Sure. And occasionally airliners crash. But air travel is till far safer than driving yourself (190x, I looked it up

39. Post 66549442 (unedited backup) (by Forsyth Jones) (scraped on Thu Mar 26 18:44:01 CET 2026) in Security Vs Convenience In Crypto:
For crypto to reach mass adoption, do we need more convenience or should the focus remain on security and self-custody?
If by "mass adoption", you mean merchants accepting it as medium-of-exchange, then it should absolutely become more convenient to use, because the competition is a debit card that pays instantly with ~0 fees and which is available to use via NFC on every phone.
Layer 2 solution is what is needed for mass adoption, but truth be told, the number one obstacle on mass adoption is the brute fact that people just don't care paying with crypto.
Or the closest thing to that would be credit cards with crypto balances like BTC or USDT, that's the easiest way to "materialize" Bitcoin in everyday life.
But we know that credit cards must comply with Visa and Mastercard rules. I won't go into the subject of the level of privacy being inferior to P2P currencies like Bitcoin, because all it takes is for the local government or a bank to demand it and they obey.
Answering the OP's question, Bitcoin is still a promise when it comes to mass adoption, but it has matured well and withstood many things. I still hope that the BTC code will mature further, but we know that the development of new BTC technologies is quite slow. I think the last significant thing we had in 5 or 15 years was Segwit, LN and Taproot... most of these measures focus more on the security and privacy of the network and efficiency in transaction confirmations (Segwit). Or batter yet, better efficiency in the use of the block.
Sacrificing security directly impacts decentralization. If Bitcoin is no longer decentralized, it will no longer have value. So concepts of blocks, confirmation time, POW and other things will never be an option in exchange for greater speed. Bitcoin is, above all, a currency, a technology and P2P payment system. Bitcoin's focus has never been on transaction approval speed, security and decentralization have always come first.
For fast transactions, we already have plastic cards, paypal, Pix and others. But I don't doubt the technology, perhaps someday the devs will be able to solve the scalability problem without sacrificing decentralization (things like increasing the block size only push the problem further down the line).
We need more convenience if we want mass adoption because that's how currency has been introduced. If someone can't easily use btc, like for trading, selling, or buying into fiat directly from their bank, they won't like it. Because if they could do it directly with banks, that means they trust it more, knowing banks won't offer this option without proper paperwork.
Meaning it is legal for them and believe it or not, the legality of it matters a lot to big investors because they could not afford to see their money taken by the lawmakers.
Bitcoin is convenient and easy to use. Just create a self-custody wallet, it clearly has send and receive buttons. Most wallets require users to make the backup before using the wallet.
Knowing how to copy and paste an address or scanning Qr codes... is already easier than using many banking apps with their cluttered UI.

As we wrap up the
BCA 2025, we would like to thank everyone who took the time to participate and write detailed answers.
Congratulations to everyone who made it into the top three in each nomination, and congrats to all raffles' winners. Thanks to everyone who continues to make the forum better! And I (and icopress) wish to express my deepest appreciation for PowerGlove's help, which made some insane efforts for giving a hand with the votes counting. Next year, we'll also be making a MEGA update to the event's format. 💪

This is second year in a row when we apply the 0.75:1 votes reduction rule and not at only 2 categories, like last year, but at more of them! As a consequence, we have the following changes:
1️⃣ lovesmayfamilis, which received most votes at "Miss BitcoinTalk" (32), remains with only 24 votes, as she won this category last year as well (the outcome of this being that Foxpup 🦊 became the winner of first prize at "Miss BitcoinTalk")
2️⃣ CryptopreneurBrainboss, which received most votes at "Local Hero" (32), remains with only 24 votes, as he won this category last year as well (the outcome of this being that igebotz became the winner of first prize at "Local Hero")
3️⃣ Hhampuz, which received most votes at "Craft Master" (53), remains with only 40 votes, as he won this category last year as well (however, he keeps his first prize at current edition as his remaining votes still place him on first place).
4️⃣ Pizza Day Contest, which received most votes at "Best Event" (42), remains with only 32 votes, as it won this category last year as well (however, it keeps its first prize at current edition as its remaining votes still place it on first place).

In comparison, last year we had 186 users being nominated. - The greatest number of nominations received by a user was 60 (theymos at Hero of Good category).
- The biggest difference between a first place and a second place was 34 votes (theymos vs. satoshi, at Hero of Good category). Last year biggest difference was of 18 votes, between PowerGlove and 1Dq, at Discovery of the Year category.
- Some mentions of Best event / project were merged all together, as they were written with words suggesting same idea. (Big thanks again to PowerGlove for trying to match each such vote into an adequate slot!)
- Some votes for nominees / categories which had their name spelled incorrectly were merged together (Mia Chloe and Mia Chole, Bitcoin Geek and Bitcoin Greek (lol) etc.)

My followup question is: how can I stop following a topic?
That's easy: stop using "Show new replies" and
start using the Watchlist. Then "watch/unwatch" does what you expect it to do

I could no longer find my way around without the watchlist. It's one of the best tools the forum has; with it, you can navigate the forum for hours before "running out of things to do."

Therefore, BlackHatCoiner, start using the watchlist and your life will change here on the forum.
