There are different scenario but we can only Make predictions based on assumptions. Security is relative if miners leave, the network adjust itself in a way current miners can be profitable. Yes there's a sacrifice in hash and security but security here is how much cost not just how much hash.

Bitcoin can't do in between or mediocrity. It's either it succeeds or it fails. If it's still operating fine around 2050 I see no reason why it would have challenges without Block rewards. Going a decade or two more means it has cut out a place for itself in the world and the older it get the less likely it can fail.

Most of the demand has always come from speculators, and this is not a bad thing. People buy bitcoin, because they speculate that, since it's the hardest money, its purchasing power is likely to continue going up. Good point. Speculation has always been part of Bitcoin, and that’s not necessarily bad. Like gold, many people hold it to protect value over time, and its real strength is being money that can move freely without borders.

First of all, thank you very much for the statistics. I find them very helpful and they show that the system is functioning stably, at least so far.

I think it's worth remembering that Bitcoin was not originally intended primarily as digital gold, but as a payment system. But today it is understood as digital gold. I believe the reason for this is how cumbersome gold is to handle and how little it actually fits into the 21st century. In addition to energy consumption, it also causes massive environmental destruction. There is a huge need to solve this problem digitally. And Bitcoin is currently the only system that is even remotely capable of doing so.

However, Bitcoin has this flaw as a substitute for gold. The halving cause also enormous inflation in the early years. Bitcoin has been around for less than 20 years and we have reached a circulation supply of over 95%. The first million Bitcoins were generated without any adjustment to the difficulty. It's as if all the gold in the world had been mined at once.

In fact, gold has a relatively constant production rate today.

I don't have a solution for this and don't know how it will develop. So I can't even say whether a solution will ever be needed. Probably none of us can. But let me play devil's advocate: Before the network collapses, larger Bitcoin holders will probably start artificially supporting miners by regularly feeding in transactions with high fees. However, this would also lead to enormous centralization and reduce mining to absurdity.

The main issue with Bitcoin is its supply algorithm. Gold behaved as a medium of exchange and a store of value. Gold production generally sits around 1.5% per year, which more or less keeps in line with increased demand. Of course, there are short-term misalignments in gold, but over long periods of time, gold basically always returns to the mean. Bitcoin has no such mechanism. It has a fixed amount that will ever be created, and the reward is arbitrarily halved regardless of value or market conditions. For Bitcoin to be a medium of exchange, it needs to use an endogenous blockchain metric that is highly correlated to price to dictate the block reward. Of course, it would need clamps, Moore's law adjustments, and many other things to be secure. However, I doubt it will ever happen because people are more concerned with numbers getting bigger than actual progress.

Yes I definitely agree with this, reason is that the price is actually the factor here, ten years ago that 100sats/vbyte was actually around same amount as 1-5sats/vbyte today, the data you provided actually showed that regardless of the drop in sats/vbyte over the years the average block revenue hasn’t dropped that much ($1000 to $5000) and it is on this that I am placing my predictions that the bitcoin price will compliment the drop in sats/vbyte.

Also I do think also like you as stated in my post that the quest for more block size will lead to use of second layers which will inherently increase the number of transactions too then and contribute to more revenue or at least not reduces it

First of all, thank you very much for the statistics. I find them very helpful and they show that the system is functioning stably, at least so far.

I think it's worth remembering that Bitcoin was not originally intended primarily as digital gold, but as a payment system. But today it is understood as digital gold. I believe the reason for this is how cumbersome gold is to handle and how little it actually fits into the 21st century. In addition to energy consumption, it also causes massive environmental destruction. There is a huge need to solve this problem digitally. And Bitcoin is currently the only system that is even remotely capable of doing so.

However, Bitcoin has this flaw as a substitute for gold. The halving cause also enormous inflation in the early years. Bitcoin has been around for less than 20 years and we have reached a circulation supply of over 95%. The first million Bitcoins were generated without any adjustment to the difficulty. It's as if all the gold in the world had been mined at once.

In fact, gold has a relatively constant production rate today.

I don't have a solution for this and don't know how it will develop. So I can't even say whether a solution will ever be needed. Probably none of us can. But let me play devil's advocate: Before the network collapses, larger Bitcoin holders will probably start artificially supporting miners by regularly feeding in transactions with high fees. However, this also means enormous centralization and reduces mining to absurdity.

A somewhat provocative outlook, admittedly. But I don't think this development is entirely unrealistic when you look at who is currently selling Bitcoin and who is buying Bitcoin.

The way I understand Bitcoin's security is not from a user interface perspective. It is far more likely that a user makes a mistake and loses the bitcoin, than his Revolut balance. In that regard, Revolut is more "secure" than the Bitcoin wallet. However, from the perspective of an attacker who wants to take down, or breach or hack a payments network, it is far easier to do it in Revolut, or to some shitcoin than bitcoin.

Why would a hacker try to take down an entire network? We had this discussion here a while back about the possibility of a 51% attack on Bitcoin, and while it's theoretically possible, there's no discernible reason somebody (who would need to be a major state actor) would want to do this. The same goes for trying to erase all of Citibank's bank accounts. There would be no reason, which is probably why we've never seen this for any major serious system.

Hackers go after money, and they therefore go after the system's weak spots, which are virtually always ultimately human.

A well-secured blockchain network is secured and a well-secured modern system is secure. A poorly-secured any of those things is not secure. The architecture doesn't usually matter unless it's something really dumb.

Even people who bought it in 2020 have probably exited during the past year, because of doubt. Doubting that it will repeat again. I may admit there's some nihilism in the bitcoin space since institutional players entered, but it will just repeat like clockwork.

Doubt and impatient are the major reasons why even veterans in the space don't actually hold up their portfolio for long. Without getting into a lot of details here, suffice to to say that 90% of real security breaches today involve the failure of people in the system, not hardware and not system-level software. And thus what secures a system is processes, governance, monitoring, prosecutors, and laws.

The Bitcoin network itself is secured because lots of people make sure it is every day by carefully controlling access to source code, vetting distros, monitoring the network for attacks, and so on. The software itself doesn't really do much except be secure on a basic level, but lots and lots of other systems are perfectly secure as well (when is the last time a major bank lost customer records for instance--it just doesn't happen).

And for serious infosec, you look at the whole problem, not just one system. It's why you don't buy the world's most expensive lock for your front door only to have the thieves break the window right next to it. Infosec goes from the on-media storage of the data all of the way to the end-users usage of the product. Hence Bitcoin is only as secure as the least secure wallet software, the most compromised broker company, the most criminal middlemen, or the stupidest user (which, again, is true for all systems).

But saying, "I am able to store data and not lose it" doesn't make your system secure. Yes, it's a prerequisite, but any decent IT architecture will secure data in a way that it is essentially impossible to lose the transaction. That is a problem that got solved about 40 years ago.

Consider this person as an average internet user who has no idea about decentralization. The reason I created this thread is yesterday I was explaining about bitcoin to a girl who is in her early 20s, I did a couple of times already about bitcoin to the same person but yesterday it went deep and she said it is interesting thing to learn when I brought the details about banking system at first and how they can control the entire money flow in the world and the concept of having paper asa currency itself doesn't make sense because it doesn't hold the intrinsic value that's when I realized we should not really make them aware about bitcoin, the first step should be about the bank and money then bitcoin will be interesting concept for them.

The GDP is a flawed metric that can be manipulated.

That doesn't mean this whole plan is always going to work, but that's the theory and thus far investors seem to believe the US will pay their debts, which is why the interest that the US pays is so low.

The nice thing here is that none of this is going to sneak up on anybody because the markets are forward-looking. Last year when Trump's actions threatened to quickly and severely wreck the economy, those interest rates creeped up a tiny amount, but it was enough to demonstrate to Trump who was boss, and he backed down. Trump is arguably the most powerful president in US history and he acts with absolutely impunity, and so if this structure constrains Trump, it's likely to constrain any president or future US government. (That's all assuming we continue to have real elections in the US and thus continued political pressure. If Trump rigs the election this year then the US will collapse for this very reason since the system keeping things in line will have disappeared).

Don't get me wrong, I agree that, politically speaking, we'll always have a debt since the population won't accept the higher taxes / lower spending until they absolutely have to, so we'll always run the economy right at the edge. And it's certainly possible that an incompetent / corrupt president will mess this up. There's a case for both a collapse and also continued stability though.

I couldn't agree more, truth that we have forgotten or we are not taking into consideration is that bitcoin was in the beginning and had none of this institutions accepting it and instead of just letting it go they spread false notions about it, just this statement you have made make me happy because yes this current time and generation validates investment from the point of institutional investment, but bitcoin has been good without any involvement of this big players and infact the big investors or institutions have cause more harm to the bitcoin community than good.

The US dollar is loaned into circulation, and is "burned" when debt is paid, but if the debt starts being paid, then we experience deflation and present borrowers cannot pay back their loans, and massive bankruptcy occurs.

I've lost what we were talking about here, but... The Fed and the Treasury are two different things, and I think we were talking about debt, which means the Treasury. About 12% of US debt is currently held by the Fed, so there is some overlap, but it's important to think of these things separately. If the Fed bought all of the Treasury debt, for instance (or a big chunk of it), then that would represent a devaluation of the USD, meaning that the next time the US went to borrow, interest rates would be much higher, probably precluding our ability to borrow further. Given that the US runs significant deficits every year, that would mean much higher taxes and deep spending cuts as we'd be forced to balance the budget. Hence the US tends to sell most of its debt to investors rather than the Fed.

Will it ever be paid? Probably not, but if the US GDP keeps growing, it can make the debt smaller as a percentage of GDP, which will make it less significant over the time. Thus far our economy is still growing pretty well, but that can change, particularly for the long term when our natural population growth is rapidly shrinking and US citizens have been trained to hate immigrants by one of its political parties for the last 20 years so they are shutting the doors on them too, and vowing to deport millions of workers on top of that, which will lead to a smaller US GDP, making our debt MORE significant instead of less so. (Countries tend to re-think their stance on immigration when their economy starts to blow up though).

BTC was never illegal. That's like saying BitTorrent was illegal.

Technically speaking Bitcoin is still not "letter of the law" legal. But in the beginning, most assumed that major governments would prosecute participants in the network, so it was effectively illegal for a while. That faded when it was clear that nobody was going to jail for having or trading Bitcoin.

However, if the US and other major governments cracked down on Bitcoin and drove it to the shadows like they do with child porn etc. then almost nobody would hold it and the price would drop to almost nothing. I'm not saying they will do that (unless the crypto community deeply ties themselves to one US political party so deeply that they are completely screwed if that party ever goes out of power, oh wait...) but it's not "impossible".

And while BitTorrent was never illegal, most of the things people did on BitTorrent were absolutely illegal (if it was legal, you'd just stick whatever it is on an ordinary server). Bitcoin is both a network technology and an end-product. Transferring bits was never illegal, but transferring money has always been highly regulated.

That's great for you, but I'm sure you realize that most people buy Bitcoin in order to make a profit, not hold it as a keepsake. Bitcoin will always "survive" in terms of the technical network, but the world markets devoting a significant percentage of its savings to Bitcoin depends only on it being a potentially profitable investment. It's really no more complicated than that.

The financial system has experienced uncertainty and change numerously since 2008. Anybody who bought bitcoin during Covid is doing pretty well right now. If Trump even hinted at making Bitcoin illegal, then the price of Bitcoin would crash and it would clearly be Trump's fault, which would be highly undesirable, politically. Trump's massive support from the crypto industry would vanish overnight. (Although to be fair, the crypto industry is extreme pro-Trump and extreme anti-Democrat, which isn't very wise, so you could make the case that if Democrats win the White House again they may well make Bitcoin illegal since today Bitcoin is so deeply associated with Trump).

So there's probably a 0.001% chance that they will effectively make stocks non-viable by failing to enforce laws against fraud, but probably a 10% chance Bitcoin could be made illegal again in the future. Without mainstream investors, Bitcoin would drop back down to the levels it was when it was illegal, e.g. $0.01 per coin. I mean, sure, technically speaking the Bitcoin network would probably "survive" in the same way child porn networks "survive" today, but governments could make it extremely difficult and dangerous to possess.

The only reason, in other words, that Bitcoin's price is more than $0.01 is that it's perfectly legal to purchase and hold in the USA and elsewhere. If that law changed, Bitcoin would be essentially worthless.

So if you are truly concerned about US laws suddenly changing, Bitcoin is surely the last thing you'd ever want to hold...

1. Fixing year 2038/2106 problem, timestamp in blockheader will expire in year 2106 ?
2. Block size increase. One of the possible reason is limit of LN-based approach that require user to create few on-chain TX.

Once your seed is created, its very important to pay attention to security of that seed. Usually people don't pay attention to security of seed initially but later when their number of Sats increases and at that moment if anything wrong happen to their wallet, its very difficult to undo the damage because of non availability of seed. If someone is new to Bitcoin and is just creating his wallet then he must take that aspect in mind.

DCA is the best way to go with Bitcoin not only for people who don't have huge money but also for people with huge capital. Bitcoin price is unpredictable and we can't figure out when its the best time to buy bitcoin and thats where DCA comes in and frees us from this worry.
