1. Post 67146891 (unedited backup) (by SquirrelJulietGarden) (scraped on Tue Sep 15 20:15:31 CEST 2026) in What makes bitcoin valuable beyond its price?:
Decentralization. Scarcity alone isn't worth much. The 21M cap only matters because there's no "emergency committee" who can decide to make it 42M during a rough quarter. With fiat, the supply cap is basically whatever the central bank had for breakfast.
Bitcoin total supply can be changed, in theory, it's possible, but practically nobody want to change that from 21M cap to a bigger cap.
How is the 21 Million Bitcoin Cap Defined and Enforced? Can Bitcoin's hard cap of 21M be changed? The most underrated feature is that it's boring. It's run on the same rules for 17 years while every "Bitcoin killer" rebrands itself each bull run.
Many altcoin projects with noisy marketing like "Bitcoin killers" easily and quickly die after one market cycle, even would not be strong enough to be alive in a next market cycle, and many Bitcoin forks failed too.
How Many Bitcoin Forks Are There? You will be surprised!!!

First of all, I just checked and the two accounts are under review so kudos to the admins on Att for that quick response.
I also want to add that the users behind this gruesome attempt to abuse a user's reputation are still part of this forum, and they have observed for a long time that either those reputable members have not yet teleported their accounts, or just don't have any interest to do so.

Yawn...
Yeah, we know, the reptilians, the masterminds behind everything, are ruling the entire universe except you, the only person on the planet smart enough to...whatever..
Yup...been there, done that, it's getting boring!
6. Post 67142268 (unedited backup) (by stompix) (scraped on Mon Sep 14 13:59:37 CEST 2026) in What is better for a country: deflation or controlled inflation?:
Deflation, even in small percentages, is destructive;
You don't really believe that Keynesian nonsense propaganda that a little bit of inflation is "good and healthy" for an economy, and that deflation would bring it into total destruction, right? You do understand this whole deflationphobia is a psyop to justify money printing, right?
I don't have to believe anyone..
I only have to look at Japan who has been battling low key deflation to see what happens to an economy when it hits something like that!
The writing is on the wall for everyone who thinks goods getting cheaper is the way to go!
I mean I can't believe there are Bitcoiners into this place for a decade who still can't fully grasp what problem Bitcoin solves.
Bitcoin was NEVER designed to solve economic problems! Nor will it solve them!
Currently, the greatest achievement is the increased growth in tinfoil production and consumption!
Open your eyes and see why we have basically zero economic transactions on Bitcoin and nobody is spending their coins, using USDT instead, and that is because they think the coins will get a higher value down the line; now do this for fiat, and once you drop your biased view, you can see what will happen.

8. Post 67138501 (unedited backup) (by JayJuanGee) (scraped on Sun Sep 13 03:14:44 CEST 2026) in Large-scale coldcard compromise underway. 600 BTC drained so far :
The release notes also repeat the thing that keeps getting lost in these threads. Installing it does not make an existing seed safe. If the seed was generated on affected firmware between 2021 and July this year, it is the same seed after the update as before it, and the fix is a new seed on fixed firmware plus moving the coins.

Nothing can make an existing seed safe.
A seed phrase can't be changed, and ColdCard seeds were guessable.
Changing a seedphrase creates a new wallet and it does not do anything for the existing wallet and seedphrase.
Does the above highlight help?
My bad! So we agree!
I absolutely disagree with the idea of keeping the Coldcard, though. If you haven't lost any funds, I'd consider moving them to a reputable signing device like SeedSigner, and throw that thing to the trash.
Let me make it clear that I don't recommend that anyone other than highly technical people do anything with any of Coinkite's products. I consider them unsafe. Yes, it's 'playing with fire', but at the same time, so is playing with ANY hardware device at this point in time.
Nope.
Just because Cold Card showed a very high level of vulnerability, arrogance and stupidness, that does not put all hardware wallets into the same category.
Frequently I find relativistic arguments that put similar categories of items in the same group to be close to retarded. It is like seeing some politicians as corrupt and evil and then also seeing that a variety of other politicians showing similar corrupt and evil attributes, and then proclaiming that all politicians are the same, when they are not. Some are more corrupt and evil than others, and some are not corrupt and/or evil.
Similar arguments can be made in regards to hardware wallets. Some have greater vulnerabilities than others, and some even have corrupt and/or evil players, such as the coinkite team has shown themselves to be (at least NVK and the CTO and maybe some others on the team who were in a position of knowing about the various RNG vulnerabilities and not doing anything about it).
Indeed, playing with Bitcoin itself is now and always has been 'playing with fire.'
That is a bit much @tvbcof. You must have difficulties viewing some of the nuances of the world. Everything in the world is not black or white.
SeedSigner has the distinct advantage of letting the user have more control of the supply chain. The potential in-built weakness (at the 'pi' or processor level) are unlikely to be narrowly targeted toward subverting crypto-currency except insofar as they may exist to attack cryptography generally. I've not researched the SeedSigner project in detail, but I would assume that they now (or will be soon) taking pains to deal with the entropy issue, and there will always be the issues associated with cold attacks on storage of secrets for any hardware device.
I would mention again that I hope people do NOT throw these things in the trash. They could be useful for further analysis in some sort of an attempt to further understand this fairly devastating attack on the Bitcoin community at large.
I don't have any arguments (enlightened or otherwise) regarding these points.
I am not a lawyer, but according to the official story (which studiously avoids any 'conspiracy theories') I'm not really sure I see a crime here. Or at least not one which anyone is likely to get more than a slap on the wrist for. We have:
- a simple mistake from some device maker/seller,
- someone(s) found they could obtain shared control of keys represented in a public blockchain and availed themselves of the discovery.
Well under the law there are criminal charges that are brought by the state, and there are civil charges that can be brought by other individuals and/or by the state.
If we presume that you are ONLY referring to criminal law (especially since you used the term "crime," then whether or not there is a violation of a statute or some common law standard, we have to look at the crime that we are alleging to have had taken place to see its the evidence that would be argued to show that a violation that took place - perhaps something like fraud or maybe some other crime could be alleged? Let's just go through the elements of fraud to figure out how such a crime could be prosecuted:
1) misrepresentation of material facts
CC marketed itself as the gold standard and seems to have had misrepresented how its random number generation was taking place.
2) knowledge of their misrepresentations
Even if coinkite might not have had know about the flaw in the software, after several complaints of loss of funds they should have had become aware at some point in time prior to July 30, 2026. there were a lot of customer complaints from 2021 and then also some specific report in May 2025.. so then there was reckless disregard for the truth. The standard is not negligence as you suggested @tvbcof
3) intent to deceive
This might be a bit of a harder hurdle if we cannot find that Coinkite personally profited. Even if it were to be argued that a "retirement plan" was in place, it would likely need to be shown that there was an intent to steal the funds by key principles of the company, otherwise maybe if intention was shown to be by key principles, then the individuals might be criminally charged rather than the company.
4) reasonable reliance of the victims on the false statements
This one can probably be easily proved in that many clients relied on the supposed good coinkite security features and the clients took adequate and sufficient measures to secure their coins and to believe that their coins were secure.
5) damage or economic loss
the damage and economic losses were extensive.
So, yeah, 3 is probably the hardest of the elements to show.
At this point there is no provable evidence that either Coinkite deliberately sabotaged their hardware with the intent to defraud, or that there was any collusion between Coinkite and the various parties who picked up the dropped private keys.
I doubt that the situation is as much of a slam dunk as you are proclaiming it to be, even though prosecutors would have some discretion in regards to whether they believe that they have enough evidence to prosecute.
Indeed, it's kind of a weird sin-like thing to even think that way here in 2026.
I personally think it likely that both deliberate sabotage and collusion to engineer a lifting of BTC probably did occur, but that means nothing. Even if it did, it doesn't seem to me like something which would get anyone into serious trouble...at least in a formal court of law.
If there is evidence of deliberate sabotage and collusion to engineer a lifting of the BTC, then that would go towards the 3rd element, so yeah, it still might not be clear if the evidence is strong enough to prosecute.
Actually, foreknowledge of the hack would possibly yield greater monetary benefit in terms of various kinds of 'insider trading', or in terms of getting compensated (or just a pat on the head for doing God's work) by entities who benefited (e.g., coin custodians who won keys as the whole system shifted away from faith in self-custody), but nobody gets in trouble for that kind of stuff these days.
Sure, insider trading is another kind of a crime, and of course, it would have different elements. I have not been hearing too much about any claims of insider trading of Coinkite and especially since insider trading rules seem to apply to public companies rather than private companies. I am pretty sure that Coinkite is a private company.

10. Post 67137291 (unedited backup) (by Satofan44) (scraped on Sat Sep 12 19:14:13 CEST 2026) in How to improve privacy before paying someone in a safe way?:
The part in bold is not true. There are some free tools and there are many paid tools with which you can check if the coins are "tainted". Putting aside our ideological disagreement with the tainted bullshit, these tools will give you exactly what an receiving institution or exchange is going to see when they receive said coin.
How do you know that an exchange uses those tools? Maybe they do, maybe they don't and have some other tools.
Tools that are industry standards rely on the same data sources, they don't have to use the same exact tool to see the exact same information. Furthermore, experimental evidence will confirm it but you have to do it yourself. I have tried with countless transactions using clean coins, and sometimes with tainted coins to see what would happen down the road with one of these systems. If you don't believe in the theory/research, then you can do the tests yourself with some tools assuming that you have money that you could burn as an expense to verify it for yourself.
Not sure what you mean by "wallet accounts". Im mostly familiar with Bitcoin Core and Electrum.
Coin Control without accounts is for noobs, and mostly old timers that don't have good advice tend to give. A single seed can derive countless addresses in countless accounts, so you would have something like this:
seed - coin - account 0
seed - coin - account 1
By using them this way, you can ensure that there is no privacy leaking. For example, account 0 can be your bigger hot-wallet stash. Account 1 can be restaurant payments. If you use accounts, no error that you commit within a single account will leak anything about the rest of what you have going on. Whereas with traditional single-account coin control, all you need is a single basic mistake to undo a lot of work and reveal a big portion of your history. It is pretty easy to do in Sparrow:
https://www.sparrowwallet.com/docs/connected-wallet.html#bonus-adding-an-account.
As far as atomic swaps, are those the same as "no-KYC swap services"? are those the same as "aggregators"? It's confusing differentiating all of these.
No, they are not. They are completely different services. Some classes that are relevant:
1) Atomic swaps, for example those that serve XMR <-> BTC. Here the limits are technical, and liquidity. You are not going to find various routes for different coins or tokens, depending on what you have and need. However, you get the most anonymity here.
2) Decentralized bridges, for example those related to THORchain. Here the limits are related to anonymity, a technologically adapt observer can trace your routes. The benefit here is that it can not be stuck for AML/KYC reasons, and it would auto refund.
3) "No-KYC" swap services such as ChangeNOW. The downside to this is that it is centralized compared to the first two. In most cases you will not have any issues, but if you are unlucky or trigger the system in some way you will be forced to do AML/KYC or abandon the coins that you are currently swapping. Upside here: Only the service can de-anonymize you, and the coins that you receive from them are AML friendly.
Strongest anonymity: Atomic swaps.
Decentralized with many routes: Decentralized bridges.
AML friendly coins with most routes: Swap services.
That is how I would rate them in general. Please keep in mind the risks and disadvantages of the options, and use what you personally need -- don't listen to the biased idiots on this forum. I have used hundreds of services while testing systems in the last few years, I have very rarely encountered issues with anything and even in those cases there are many things that you can do. Experience is key, therefore pick something and start practicing with small amounts.
Anyway, nonetheless im interested in what AML checking services do you know, because like I said, from what I have read, the powerful AML checkers are reserved to professionals, so you would need to pay a lawyer/tax guy to check your addresses out if you want a real peace of mind, compared to some free AML checkers which we also don't really know how they work or who is behind. However doxing yourself to pay some guy to check your addresses on that professional software has risks in itself. What if you hold risky AML coins and they show up? It's a bit of a slippery slope, that is why I never saw a clear way to deal with crypto payments and been treating it mostly as a store of value and barely moving any funds.
I would not recommend doxxing yourself to some "guy" to do an AML check for you,
it brings no advantages at all nor does it bring any guarantees of anything. This kind of service is more for the people that have not grown out of the thinking in "authorities" way, you know the kind of people that would ask their doctor how they should drink a glass of water.

Here are some right now, keep in mind that things change over the years (and I hope that I pasted the right links):
https://amlbot.comhttps://www.scorechain.com/resources/crypto-glossary/aml-wallet-check-freeThe best solution for this kind of topic for those that really need it is to be in the network of someone who has access to Chainalysis. I've had the best success with that, I don't remember a single case of coins that were graded as low risk by Chainalysis having issues later. Of course, the biggest obstacle here is getting access to Chainalysis.

Doesn't it feel great that we can leave this utter waste of time and energy to the past?
The biggest damage this malicious BIP dealt was to any arguments against the exploit that was introduced by SegWit specifically version 1 that allowed easy and cheap injection of arbitrary data into the chain. Now every time anybody wants to talk about that, everyone will be reminded of this malicious shitfork instead of talking about a real existing exploit.
And not only BIP110, but also LukeDashJr. From what I read on X, he's reached the delusion level that he's now planning to change the algorithm of Bipcoin, so that blocks don't take a whole day to be mined. I think we lost him for good.
He is taking a page out of the bcash book by trying to make a shitchain survive artificially. I wonder if they also allow mining of thousands of blocks per day to surge past bitcoin's tip height and get miners some incentive to go there for the reward.

Can't this be partially mitigated by simply getting rid of the discount? I mean people could still use the exploit but right now they are actually incentivized to do so.

14. Post 67134301 (unedited backup) (by takuma sato) (scraped on Fri Sep 11 19:50:20 CEST 2026) in What is currently the best VPN that accepts BTC (or cryptos):
As said above, there is a thread
List of VPN Service Providers, which is still active and maintained.
Mullvad and IVPN are one of the best VPNs for privacy right now. Obscura looks interesting too (long story short, it's partnered with Mullvad but their structure feels like using two VPN instead of one at the same time).
My favorite is Mullvad.
This is the first time I have read about Mullvad, but it seems interesting. I currently have a Surfshark subscription, and I previously used NordVPN. I haven't thought much about a VPN that accepts crypto, but this might be my next move. Thanks for sharing this!
Really? It's a very popular VPN provider and it probably has the best reputation online when it comes to privacy. Surfshark and NordVPN aren't best choices for privacy though. Otherwise, if you want a VPN for streaming and gaming, both are good choices.
Thinking about VPNs, is there anything that would affect people using them if they operate in different jurisdictions or something? Like, if you really want to be private and pay for a service, wouldn't the business want to know who they are serving? That would be important if the country where the business is registered allows anonymity.
VPNs are a problem in countries like Belarus, Iran, Turkmenistan, China, North Korea and in a few other countries. In most of the world, it's perfectly fine to use them for privacy.
I think his question is more about the service provider dealing with client data. These guys are in Sweden I think. As far as I know western countries force businesses to collect client data so I wonder how they run it. It's great that you can pay anonymously tho, since it's helping a lot of people that would be in trouble, in places like the ones you mentioned for instance. A Chinese person wanting to escape his regime can do it thanks to guy like Mullvad, im just wondering how they run their business and pay taxes on anonymous clients. Perhaps it's not even needed that they collect any personal info. At the end of the day you can go to shops and pay with cash without saying anything. However crypto payments have a permanent record so that would be something to consider. Like if you are Chinese and you are paying to avoid the great firewall with a VPN, you should study how the whole process looks like. And even if you are just a western dude that wants some privacy, you want to know if the coins you are using are low AML risk for instance, as when you pay the service, the service will have to pay taxes and im not sure what happens in that case if you are unlucky and you get some tainted coins in the process of paying. Even if you are using Tor and using random names and so on, you want to minimize any risks and understand how it all works before doing anything.
15. Post 67134235 (unedited backup) (by takuma sato) (scraped on Fri Sep 11 19:32:25 CEST 2026) in How to improve privacy before paying someone in a safe way?:
(Your public address) ---> (Service or software that improves your privacy) ---> (Receiving address) ----> (Person/Entity puts coins in exchange/pays taxes)
Back then it was very common and everyone used mixers and people understood it was common sense to use them in order to improve your privacy, but given that recently they randomly incriminate mixer users, how could this be solved?
When the person/entity deposits the coins you sent them into an exchange and/or pays taxes on those gains, and if you are unlucky and you received coins that are tainted during the mixing process, they would be in problems and may point to you as the previous owner of the coins. This is a fact and some people live in a parallel reality when they claim "tainted coins do not exist" so im not here to discuss facts, just looking for solutions.
You can get tainted coins from any activity that does not include a fully regulated financial establishment, including receiving payments, donations and so forth. So you can put that topic aside as it applies to everything. For what you are looking for your solution is:
1) Wallet accounts.
2) Atomic swaps or "no-KYC" swap services. I mention both because each comes with its own benefits and drawbacks, therefore you can decide what you want.
Create a sufficient number of fresh wallet accounts, each one funded by a clean conversion from Monero to Bitcoin using one of the two options in number 2. By having many accounts like this: Your history is clean, you always have funds for payments ready, you can combine unused accounts if the payment amount goes beyond what you have in one account. Once an account has been used or is low in funds, you can atomic swap it back into Monero and stop using it.
If your priority is to not have tainted coins, then those "no KYC" swap services are your solution. Coins that come from there are not tainted, and have a low AML risk. There is a low risk of being flagged for KYC/AML if you do something wrong, but if the amounts in question are low then so be it? If you are risking only $100 - $1000 per transaction for a huge boost in anonymity, is this not a cost that you'd be willing to pay if eventually some transaction fails?
Actually the reason why the coins are or aren't "tainted" is not because you have no control of the coins you get, but you have no way to tell what a "tainted coin" is. It's a made up term and there is no way to tell what a chain analysis company deems as "tainted". It's completely arbitrary as far as anyone can tell.
The part in bold is not true. There are some free tools and there are many paid tools with which you can check if the coins are "tainted". Putting aside our ideological disagreement with the tainted bullshit, these tools will give you exactly what an receiving institution or exchange is going to see when they receive said coin. That said, an exchange can still flag you for other reasons even if coins are not tainted making the whole ordeal even more stupid.
Yes, anyone can get tainted coins at any moment, but if you deposit them in a CEX, the problem is yours unfortunately. And if you pay someone, and then they put it on a CEX, they will point to you as the previous hop. So im looking to avoid such problems.
Not sure what you mean by "wallet accounts". Im mostly familiar with Bitcoin Core and Electrum. As far as atomic swaps, are those the same as "no-KYC swap services"? are those the same as "aggregators"? It's confusing differentiating all of these. I have seen Trocador being recommended around as a way to get some privacy with low AML risk, however im not sure if those are available in western countries, as there is a warning sign in a website that lists such services that says it's not available for western country residents. If im paying for a service, there does exist a scenario in which they may ask the service provider for the person behind the payment, and so you don't want to be doing anything that's not allowed beside not holding AML risky coins. This sucks because it makes dealing with crypto payments so complicated. Having to go thought so many hops to pay for some service. A debit card transfer seems less risky at this point, even if it has zero privacy, it's a legal service anyway, but it sucks you have to give up on privacy, but at the same time using crypto payments leaves some permanent record, bank statements are eventually removed after some years.

Maybe they do, maybe they don't and have some other tools.
If the source comes from a high-profile activity (major exchanges hacker and so on), I guess those tools can be useful. The problem is always going to be smaller ones like deposit related to casino addresses, and so on. Although the solution given by some people is simple, such as depositing the fund to your own address first before you sent them to an exchange. I doubt it will last very long, especially with how stricter some KYC rules have become. CMIIW.

If CLARITY actually passes, the biggest winner isn't Bitcoin. Bitcoin doesn't care what people in Washington think.
~snip~
Apart from the fact that the price reacts to every news that comes from various US agencies - and that the biggest players are located in the US, on which a lot actually depends. I’m not saying Bitcoin has turned into a US project, but no other country in the world has such a significant influence on it.
19. Post 67133509 (unedited backup) (by Satofan44) (scraped on Fri Sep 11 15:53:13 CEST 2026) in How to improve privacy before paying someone in a safe way?:

"Taint" is a business model for the companies selling the Naughty list. And it's an attack on Bitcoin's fungibility.
22. Post 67132722 (unedited backup) (by Synchronice) (scraped on Fri Sep 11 10:38:49 CEST 2026) in What is currently the best VPN that accepts BTC (or cryptos):

So basically what you're describing is a SeedSigner,
To be honest with you, I always thought SeedSigner was a product like a Ledger, a Trezor et cetera. Only now that I looked it up I found out it is actually a 'Do It Yourself' airgapped wallet. This is going to be an exciting rabbit hole to go in, particularly because I have some Pis sitting unused for many years in a box.

My favorite is Mullvad.
This is the first time I have read about Mullvad, but it seems interesting. I currently have a Surfshark subscription, and I previously used NordVPN. I haven't thought much about a VPN that accepts crypto, but this might be my next move. Thanks for sharing this!
Thinking about VPNs, is there anything that would affect people using them if they operate in different jurisdictions or something? Like, if you really want to be private and pay for a service, wouldn't the business want to know who they are serving? That would be important if the country where the business is registered allows anonymity.

27. Post 67130855 (unedited backup) (by takuma sato) (scraped on Thu Sep 10 18:26:07 CEST 2026) in What is currently the best VPN that accepts BTC (or cryptos):
Agree with the comments on mullvard, do use it on wire-guard when needed though..
Don’t forget to save that 16 digit code, (very important) if you’re doing a long subscription.. otherwise, it’s something you can easily create as much as possible account unless you have some configuration you don’t wanna keep losing
You can also have a separate account and add a time for auto sub you [most choice for KYC Stanley account]
So you recommend Wire-guard instead of their own software? For what reason? I have never used VPN's much and when I did I used their software, mostly because it was easier to screw up during setup, but if anyone explains why I may give Wire-guard a try and finally learn how to use it.
Also does it work with Tor to do the whole registration, signup and so on?
My favorite is Mullvad.
- It has a flat price. You're paying €5 per month, and I think this is fixed since 2009.
- It accepts BTC & XMR.
- You don't mess with accounts; it gives you a 16-digit code and you just login with this every time.
- You can pay any amount, and you get the respective days or hours you're paying for based on the flat price. (e.g., pay €2.5 get 2 weeks, pay €50 get 10 months etc.)
What do you recommend to anonymize your BTC before paying? Exchanging them for XMR? What are some trusted services and how do you avoid unluckily ending up with tainted coins? I want privacy when paying but I also don't want to end up with tainted coins. It's not fair this whole "tainted coins" thing but what can you do. I mean imagine you pay a service with tainted coins, it's great so I would like to avoid that.
28. Post 67130244 (unedited backup) (by SquirrelJulietGarden) (scraped on Thu Sep 10 14:46:49 CEST 2026) in How to improve privacy before paying someone in a safe way?:
I think what you're looking for is Wasabi Wallet with its new "Coinjoin Payments" feature. Both the sender and receiver gain privacy, and there is no need to consolidate any private coins that creates toxic change. You kill two birds with one stone.
I don't know about their new feature but Wasabi wallet received many questions, discussions in the forum about their cooperation with Chainalysis - not sure my memory is too correct but you can check
here. It is like severe concern on why Wasabi wallet team did that while they claimed to provide products for privacy and anonymity for their users.
I never had a problem with "tainted coins".
Likely you are knowledgeable and skillful to do that without problems but with the others, it is not too easy.

I have two questions.
1. How does this tracker know that BlackRock's bitcoin is custodied by Coinbase? There is no announcement from neither BlackRock nor Coinbase regarding who custodies the bitcoin, AFAIK.
2. How does the tracker know how much BTC each ETF company owns? I don't think this is published either.
So basically, BlackRock and Grayscale own something around 90% of all ETF bitcoin.
Tbh, I thought the same when I read about the incident.
Though it may be inferred from ETF filings, custody arrangements, wallet attribution, or blockchain analysis, neither BlackRock nor Coinbase has publicly confirmed the relationship, so I felt it was premature for him to treat it as a certainty.
ETF issuers generally disclose holdings through reporting or filings, and trackers can use those disclosures to estimate the amount held. Of course, they’ll label it as “private information,” but many of them use the same routes generally used to estimate these figures.
30. Post 67129114 (unedited backup) (by X-ray) (scraped on Thu Sep 10 04:08:31 CEST 2026) in $320M Liquid Hack: A Setback for Bitcoin’s Institutional Adoption?:
But actually that Liquid network is been built or created on Bitcoin. This is a sidechain which has been develop which is peg on BTC.
The difference between the Lightning network is this is decentralized and trustless. While the Liquid network rely on the federation of trusted members. This is the reason why Lighting network has been recognize to be a Bitcoin native rather than Liquid.
Maybe the only difference is Liquid may have or serve different purpose, but that network still part of Bitcoin.
Just another sidechain that attached itself to Bitcoin I assume, the inner workings of their blockchain is different and more vulnerable because of smart contract built on Elements.
Even if the sidechain peg their wrapped BTC to real BTC, I would not consider it as part of Bitcoin, maybe someone else do.
You got to love the "white hat" defense. Translation: "I successfully stole it, realized I can't wash 4,000 BTC without the feds kicking my door in, so now I am graciously returning it in exchange for a bug bounty and no jail time."
I don't see how it is a setback for institutional adoption. Most real money from institutions is held by BlackRock.
Yeah that was funny, taking 15% hostage as a "bug bounty" without consent nor agreement and calling themselves white hat.
31. Post 67129100 (unedited backup) (by Darker45) (scraped on Thu Sep 10 03:50:01 CEST 2026) in $320M Liquid Hack: A Setback for Bitcoin’s Institutional Adoption?:
Aside from crypto exchanges and perhaps a handful of other relatively smaller Bitcoin-related financial institutions, are there global financial giants that actively use the Liquid network for the movements of their funds?
I don't think the network is playing a vital role in the wider Bitcoin ecosystem such that this hack would cause a "setback for Bitcoin's institutional adoption". This might not even diminish their confidence a bit knowing all too well that the compromise isn't
really about Bitcoin.
1. Isn't that part of BlackRock's--and other issuers for that matter--mandatory public disclosures considering that its Bitcoin Spot ETF is publicly traded?
[1]2. I guess that's also part of the mandatory transparency that's required of them. Blackrock and other issuers are providing updated ETF data on a daily basis on their websites.

This understanding of Bitcoin is not helpful, because to use Bitcoin you need to use a Bitcoin wallet, and therefore you HAVE to choose one to control your bitcoin. The handling of the keys is part of Bitcoin, even though it's not part of the "blockchain", and if it's not working correctly, it is a direct attack to Bitcoin itself.
Yeah I understand the importance of Bitcoin wallet and how closely it ties to Bitcoin
I'm still finding it hard to with the line that a vulnerability exploited in a wallet
Is considered a Bitcoin hack.
Or what you mean as Bitcoin hack is in respect to the entire Bitcoin system.
Which means the Blockchain or it's protocol has never been hacked but a part of the system has.
[/u]
According to what I can deduce, Bitcoin Blockchain wasn't hacked, instead, it was a side network built on it that got hacked.
So it's better to still stick to the old system of network that has a solid reputation and good security standing than try to delve into side networks which is just like a leech on the main Bitcoin Blockchain system and still without a solid or even near solid reputation as the mainnet.
Am just concerned that programmers have to get really sophisticated when it comes to building new programs like side chain on the existing network because hackers seem to know how to exploit loopholes with their tools, I wonder what happens when quantum computers come into play, what would be the fate of investors with large portfolio in the mainnet.
Developers and programmers really need to learn to use very complex softwares if they come up with new ideas because it does not look like they are ready for what quantum computers can do if it gets into the hands of hackers.

"Bitcoin hack" would be the top of all news all over the world. But there has not been any "bitcoin hacks". What we have had so far are exchange hacks, centralized networks hacks and exploits, altcoins/shitcoins going belly up, and stuff like that.
I would argue that the recent Coldcard self-custody wound is a Bitcoin hack. Yes, it wasn't a Bitcoin client / Bitcoin network / Bitcoin cryptography kind of hack, but it was a wallet hack, and Bitcoin is ultimately pieces of Bitcoin wallets.
And it wasn't any kind of wallet hack, it was a hack on cold storage security. This is the worst kind of hacks.
We could categorize it separately as a Bitcoin wallet security breach, since Bitcoin itself wasn't hacked. It was the tools or infrastructure used to store and manage the Bitcoin that were compromised.
There are many other scenarios we could look at too, such as the numerous exchanges that have been hacked in the past.
Even when the stolen coins were Bitcoin, people usually refer to those incidents as exchange hacks, not Bitcoin hacks, because the Bitcoin network itself wasn't affected. The problem was with the exchange's wallet or security system.

Mixers or exchanges are not recommended for sending coins directly to the recipient.
For any operation, whether using a mixer or an exchange, always receive the coins in your self-custody wallet first and then pay the recipient. Use AML checkers to verify the score.
This way, if you receive compromised coins, you can use a reliable and reputable solution to obtain coins with low AML scores.
You can exchange your coins on exchanges without KYC, such as the well-established ones on the forum like b1exch, sageswap, and ccecash (I use them quite often).
You can use wallets that support silent payments (like Sparrow, Cake wallet) to further increase your privacy (I believe this doesn't influence the AML score) and agree with the receiver also using it.
In most cases, the service that indicates the UTXO is compromised will request some proof of deposit and other types of evidence that may be sufficient to release the funds, the person you paid doesn't even need your intervention, except in more serious cases.
I think what you're looking for is Wasabi Wallet with its new "Coinjoin Payments" feature. Both the sender and receiver gain privacy, and there is no need to consolidate any private coins that creates toxic change. You kill two birds with one stone.
I never had a problem with "tainted coins".
Doesn't this increase the risk of both parties receiving coins with high AML? Coinjoin often comes with high AML.

Sorry I'm not following
The hack imo wasn't as a result of a flaw from bitcoin itself
It was from the wallet key generation mechanism.
What was affected directly was the users of the wallet and not all bitcoin.
and Bitcoin is ultimately pieces of Bitcoin wallets.
I thought wallet just hold keys that gives control over bitcoin
which exist as utxo on the blockchain.

Looking for a new VPN that will accept BTC or any other reasonable payment method such as XMR. Must be non-KYC, Tor friendly, and work in Linux.
My favorite is Mullvad.
~~
Yes overall this is a good VPN. I have been seeing for a few days that julerz12 is running a campaign where six months of Mullvad VPN is almost free, just need $20 deposit at a casino and 1x wagering. I don't know if there are still slots available but as far as I saw it seems like there are still some slots available. OP If you want you can try it.

1. How does this tracker know that BlackRock's bitcoin is custodied by Coinbase? There is no announcement from neither BlackRock nor Coinbase regarding who custodies the bitcoin, AFAIK.
Official SEC FilingsYou can search more about Coinbase from the same filing by searching "coinbase" alone to save time.
2. How does the tracker know how much BTC each ETF company owns? I don't think this is published either.
BlackRock has to share that data every day because they are required by law, so they publish this data on their site.
https://www.blackrock.com/us/individual/products/333011/ishares-bitcoin-trust-etfWhich then these trackers scrap and you know the rest.
So basically, BlackRock and Grayscale own something around 90% of all ETF bitcoin.
But BlackRock and Fidelity are the top two holders. Grayscale is at number three. BR alone covers around 70%, and if you combine all top 3, they cover at least 90%. So the top two only make up 80% (almost).

Fair enough but OP was talking about Liquid not hardware wallet, even though I' still argue that a closed sourced and unreviewed hardware wallet should not have been considered secure in first place. So it is not exactly like it was the good cold storage option that got hacked.
If there is any news about who is doing these hacks, please let me know.
A-holes who know enough programming and enough time to be able to find flaws in other systems who also think that it's okay to steal other people's money!
