I think the fee argument indeed is minor in the present, as written in the discussion with Satofan44.

But in my country, the fees are between slightly below 1% (debit cards) and 4-7% (credit cards!) per transaction, depending on the payment volume, the type of card and the transaction speed. Credit cards payments can take up to 10 days. These are the fees of our biggest payment processor Mercadopago. I don't think this is negligible.

You're of course correct -- and everything is speculative anyway, when we talk about a future low-volatility scenario. For now, we can use data like the PayPal study I mentioned, but of course that only gives us data about the (recent) past, not the future.

But that already requires some "pro-Bitcoin mindset", or at least awareness about how Bitcoin works. I was instead mainly assuming a "dumb" (in the sense of "unaware"/"not interested in details") merchant who doesn't care at all about Bitcoin and doesn't know how it works. For this kind of merchant the cost of implementation/hedging and the potential benefit are the main drivers of adoption (or not). They don't want to care about Bitcoin's cycles and so on.

Of course you're correct that Bitcoin awareness (and its future potential) is present, then the equation for merchants can be quite different.

I agree to disagree here - we're talking about different things however. The scenario you mention - a merchant who not only accepts, but also buys Bitcoin - is imo already also a "Bitcoin investor". And thus it will be a Bitcoin-aware person (see last paragraph). I think this is of course the ideal every Bitcoiner strives to propagate, but that merchant percentage probably will stay low.

Let's speculate Bitcoin achieves a volatility close to gold's, i.e. crashes would be of less than 50% compared to ATH (1980 crash aside) and take several years, i.e. you wouldn't risk to lose 50% in a few months. If there was some really convincing gold derivative (not some random RWA token) which could be accepted by the merchant without real counterparty risk, then I guess adoption of that token would already be significant. In the 90s or early 2000s the e-gold system had some success in e-commerce even if this business was still nascent.

In that utopian future you're a merchant and are presented with four main options:

- card payments (around 1-5% fees depending on the type of card, no hedging cost, chargeback fraud risk, used by 70% of population)
- Bitcoin payments (significant but low fees, some hedging cost but much less than now, 1% exchange cost, 15% of population, treasury option due to positive long term trend)
- stablecoin payments (no hedging cost, but risky to hold for longer periods, otherwise ~1% exchange cost, relatively high deposit fees on exchanges, 5% of population)
- altcoin payments (high hedging cost, near zero fees, 1% exchange cost, 1-5% of population per altcoin)

then Bitcoin would be one of the 2 most attractive payment means, either besides stablecoin or besides card payments (depending on if the importance of fees).

Bitcoin would be even more attractive if there was a positive feedback loop where also the suppliers accept it. This would however take longer, I guess.

ACK. Yes I know some payment processors take 2% or more fees. However, if you have significant volume of Bitcoin customers, that cost would shrink to ~1% or less if you simply use an exchange. And then you would already be cheaper than credit cards with negligible hedging costs.

If it's regret for their actions, it's true that they sometimes harm many parties, but I see many cases of corruptors who never regret their actions and even feel no remorse after doing them. Who would be proud of having a lot of money if it's directly related to the cases on Epstein's list? Frankly, they are immoral and hardly exemplary. Money can sometimes blind a person's conscience because sometimes they cheat just to achieve group and individual desires. I believe that in the end what we are looking for is just comfort and a normal life with our families without the fear of being burdened by sins or mistakes in the past.

Fact is shown with Bitcoin price and this chart for Satoshi per dollar. Governments, central banks can do things they want, say bad words about Bitcoin, some people can attack Bitcoin too but they all don't change this fact of Bitcoin growth. The growth is strong and has lasted for many years so there will be not risk of Bitcoin attacked to dead.

I haven't read what you two wrote, but I feel like the simplest answer is usually overlooked in these discussions. It's not volatility, the scalability problem or the capital gains tax as much as the brute fact that people don't care about paying in bitcoin.

You can argue that for sure, in many cases, but not always. If the cost to adopt Bitcoin is negligible, then why would someone not want to adopt it even if it only brings a few extra customers or sales? As a merchant myself I have adopted it a very long time ago, and I absolutely do not care whether it brings consistent sales or not. In the case of others, this may not be true if there are:

Running costs, such as a paid service to accept payments.
Market costs, whether due to volatility, exchange costs or whatever else could be.
Difficulty in overall adoption or integration, which I believe is not so much the case almost anywhere anymore.

Anyway how do you asses this demand as an average merchant? Do you need to have people writing you emails all the time or approaching you in person to adopt it? Would you adopt it if people did this and you knew nothing about Bitcoin or how to adopt it? What about many cases where there were countless emails asking for acceptance of a certain small or mid size merchants, but it let to nowhere? I mean I get your point, and it is valid in some cases -- but this is definitely not the complete story. We may differ in details and perspectives, but overall d5000 is right -- even if volatility may or may not be so much of a big deal in some cases as I argue -- improved volatility metrics would help in practically all cases.

Lightning isn't Bitcoin. If it were, then they would just make Lightning, Bitcoin and forget about Bitcoin core altogether.

And if Lightning actually had a real-world use, then it would be widely adopted.

All L2's amount to the same thing: a different architecture and network that eventually (at the whim of the L2) transacts on the actual Bitcoin network. Hence it is not honest to combine the benefits of both Lightning and Bitcoin anymore than it's honest to combine the benefits of the Bitcoin ETF and Bitcoin.

This is why Bitcoin is not accepted by hardly any mainstream merchants.

This is why nobody here pays for their morning coffee with Bitcoin (or Lightning for that matter).

This is why this is never going to happen, ever.

This is why fast stablecoins are growing in merchant acceptance and Bitcoin is not.

In other words, if you need to verify the L2 did its job, then why use the L2 at all?

Maybe that's why Bitcoin L2s have never amounted to anything in the marketplace: they are a pointless waste of time and resources...

If you store your value on an L2, you are 100% dependent on the L2. Every single advantage you think Bitcoin would bring is nullified with an L2, because the software the user is actually touching is not Bitcoin, it's the L2. And all of the L2s out there don't use an architecture anything like Bitcoin because... Bitcoin's architecture doesn't scale.

Beberapa waktu yang lalu saya merombak kembali daftar trust saya*, entah apakah itu juga berpengaruh atau tidak.
Dulu juga saya seringkali melakukan update pada daftar trust tersebut, dan memang bergantian DT1 ⇆ DT2.

Jika dilihat pada data DT sebelumnya, theymos juga seringkali dari DT1 ke DT2 kemudian balik lagi DT1:

ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসের একটিভিটি ২০২৬

আসসালামু আলাইকুম আশা করি সবাই ভাল আছেন, আবারো চলে আসলাম আর একটি নতুন মাসের একটিভিটি রিপোর্ট নিয়ে, তবে দুঃখজনকভাবে বলতে হয় যে এই ফেব্রুয়ারি মাসে আমাদের লোকাল থ্রেডে ২০২২ সাল অক্টোবর মাসের পরে তিন বছরেরও বেশি সময় পর আবার আমাদের এই লোকাল থ্রেডের মেরিট অ্যাক্টিভিটি সবচাইতে কম দেখা গেল।
একটা সময় যেখানে বাংলাদেশ এবং পাকিস্তান এই দুই লোকাল থ্রেডকে লোকাল বোর্ড দেওয়া নিয়ে তুমুল আলোচনা হতো সেখানে এখন শুধুমাত্র পাকিস্তানকে নিয়েই আলাপ আলোচনা হয়। বাংলাদেশ অনেক পিছিয়ে গিয়েছে।

যাইহোক তারপরও আশা রাখতেছি যে আমাদের এই লোকাল থ্রেডে নতুন মানুষদের আবির্ভাব ঘটবে যারা এই লোকাল কমিউনিটির জন্য ভালো অবদান রাখবে যেমনটা আমরা দেখেছি ২০২৩ সালে।

সবশেষে যারা এ মাসে সর্বোচ্চ অ্যাক্টিভিটি করে বাংলা থ্রেডকে টিকিয়ে রেখেছেন তাদেরকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে নিচে বিস্তারিত ডাটা গুলো চার্টের মাধ্যমে তুলে ধরা হলো।

Και τότε θα πουν εμείς θα στηρίξουμε το CBDC μας με αντίστοιχα αποθέματα σε BTC (αρχικά τουλάχιστον, όπως ήταν και το δολάριο κάποτε)...

Ναι, μόλις διάβασα αυτό το νούμερο αναφέρεται στο ποσοστό του χρυσού που είχαν custody οι τράπεζες από το συνολικό επίσημο νομισματικό χρυσό. Ο παρονομαστής δηλαδή είναι τα επίσημα χρυσά νομίσματα, όχι κοσμήματα κι οτιδήποτε είχε βιομηχανική χρήση.

An address is just a representation of a hash of a public key. Since hash functions are one-way, you can't go from an address to a public key.

The only ways you can know this information is:

if there are outgoing transactions from the address; spending from an address requires revealing the public key, so that nodes can verify the signature.
if the address owner has signed a message using the address, or just revealed the public key on purpose.

You are applying a narrow view on a problem that is complex. There are extreme differences in between countries in the European union, whereby some societies are strictly preferring cash and whereby others are almost on what you could call a "credit card standard". Just because some places exist where they prefer cash that does not mean anything for this. The actual state of the EU is currently such that the countries that a strict about cash are in the minority and have been losing this battle for a long time. This means that with enough pressure and persuasion they will eventually fall and a digital rollout will continue. What are you going to do about it? Leave the EU? Roll Eyes

Please, cash has been losing the battle for a long time. When was the $10k limit set and when was it raised to accommodate inflation? The limit is being purposefully left as is, as to let inflation eat its value. It is not even 10% of what it was when it was set. Many other large cash purchases are banned everywhere. It is happening, and the tax evasion minority can't block it on their own. They will force them to comply.

PayPal or card companies are private intermediaries, they are dependent on the banking system and are not the direct liability of the central bank, but a CBDC would be a direct liability of the central bank. Digital cash that could theoretically reach citizens without banks. It carries a different policy goal in terms of financial inclusion, faster interbank settlement and reducing costs in cross-border payments. The fear is not entirely unfounded. Programmable money, spending restrictions in certain sectors or negative interest are all theoretically possible within the CBDC architecture. Although similar controls still exist in the banking system today, CBDC can implement them directly at the central bank level. This is where the debate lies.

It is also important to remember that extreme volatility is not sustainable if an asset wants to gain global acceptance in the long term. Increasing participation from large institutions, pension funds or state level institutions increases liquidity and generally volatility gradually decreases. Looking at history, it can be understood that the percentage movement of Bitcoin in each new cycle has decreased relatively compared to the previous cycle In fact, no one has it because it is an open market. But some things can be helpful in reducing volatility:

1. Increase in spot ETFs and institutional participation
2. Widespread use of on-chain payment layer-2 solutions
3. Increase in the number of long term holders
4. Improved regulatory clarity

It is not possible to completely eliminate volatility and it is not necessary. Rather as the market gets bigger and deeper, volatility will naturally be controlled so rather than calling it a bug or a feature I would say it is a natural feature that gradually changes with a mature market.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The EU is making concrete steps towards the Digital Euro all the time, it is well underway. Even the most recent updates on this matter are clear, this is the direction in which Europe is going.

This is not true. Current fiat does not even have 10% of the capabilities that a CBDC has. Anything that is trivial to do for Tether is extremely annoying and painful to do with the fiat system. I assume you have never been in contact with the software and infrastructure that these things run on. All of this is a bit off topic though, people can go with all sorts of conspiracy theories and speculations how CBDCs will or will not be implemented.

This is not correct, don't put every kind of volatility in the same category. As is clear from this thread, or maybe if you read between the lines, there is nothing wrong with upward volatility. The primary obstacle for Bitcoin is the downward volatility, and it is the same for the concept of store of value. Who would complain about upwards volatility? Why? You'd prefer it to not appreciate in value over time instead? Cheesy

Is Europe not getting ready for a Digital Euro that includes a digital 'physical Cash' too? How this is going to work, I have no idea. I suppose either NFC Bank notes or similar technology. Digital Euro will have ownership limits too, unless the current version of Cash disappears I do not see how any body would be stupid enough to use the new, limited one. It would not have any kind of appeal.
