BlackHatCoiner's point about no incentive is right, but there's a more basic blocker underneath it. Apple Pay and Google Pay just tokenize a card number over NFC, they don't broadcast transactions, so a 'native' crypto tap would need an entirely new scheme the merchant's terminal can't read. And the merchant end is the real wall: their POS only settles through Visa/MC and they want fiat anyway. So the card provider converting in the background isn't a placeholder for the native version, it pretty much is the integration.

Forget about it. It's not going to work. If the majority were willing to accept such shit forks, one of the thousands of altcoins that have been created in the last decade would have overtaken Bitcoin by now. None of them have and many of them are dead.
Ridiculous comparison. None of those altcoins were officially called, "Bitcoin", and non of those altcoins had the power of the US government and it's their allies behind them. None of those altcoins had the cooperation of every single major broker and all major BTC holders. None of those altcoins proposed to legally replace the Bitcoin codebase. Etc. etc.
Be more specific about the change. Is it a protocol change? Something like censoring transactions that spend X inputs? Is it violating the 21 million cap? It is a soft fork proposal like a quantum-safe algorithm migration? Is it a block size limit change?
Does it matter? One would hope that the law passed would be a reasonable one, and maybe it would be, but that's not the point of the OP. The point is that it's absolutely possible and even plausible that a government can control Bitcoin, hence debunking a popular myth about it.
Yes, once Bitcoin is governed by a board, it's no longer Bitcoin, and I don't see that happening to BTC. Even though there's no way some certain government or powerful organization will enforce some restriction and confiscation on individual who dont use their fork shitcoin there's no way they will change the stance of the Bitcoiner community towards BTC, but after reading what OP i thought about the of it happening in the future I want to ask how many Bitcoiners are truly prepare such move since people seem not to care about self custody holding of their BTC.
Individuals can use whatever codebase they want, and, privately, call it whatever they want. You could call it "Bitcoin" or "Coke" or "Pepsi" or whatever else between yourself and your close friends.
But if you publicly advertised your fork as "Bitcoin" and used the BTC symbol to promote it, you would be prosecuted. And no serious broker, app or other company would do something illegal. Hence your fork would need to be called something else, publicly.

I don't think that, the reason why someone who really understands Bitcoin but, don't want to get involved in it is because such a person doesn't trust himself managing keys. To me if someone is informed and is well enlightened about Bitcoin then , such a one is not just interested in holding Bitcoin. Because I don't see the reason why someone who is aware about Bitcoin and the problem that, Bitcoin tries to solve that will not like to get involved in it.

I agree with you, but another reason is that many people prefer convenience over responsibility. Holding your own private keys, gives you full control to protect your wallet, but it’s also means that if you make any mistake or lose access to your private key, no one can help you recover it. Because of that fear many people choose platforms that will manage everything for them. As for volatility, it’s not everyone that has the mind to watch their investment drop 50% without panicking. To survive this kind of market movement, a person needs strong, emotional control, and conviction. So now I understand why people prefer to leave their responsibility for another person instead of them handling it themselves.

Imagine if the Major Players who collectively own a huge chunk of BTC and/or have custody of most of BTC figured out a scheme that would benefit themselves, and it required major changes to the Bitcoin core codebase. They would do what they've already been doing, and lobby Congress to pass a law saying that their proposed fork is "the real Bitcoin" and everything else is a fraud, and will be prosecuted as such.
It is true that Bitcoin whales have power to bring change to the protocol more than people with very few BTC, but it depends on the changes. If the change fundamentally changes the entire protocol, such as violating the hard cap limit, then the purchasing power of the whales might not be enough to actually change it, because they may end up economic minority, and fail to make their fork the Bitcoin with the most liquidity. I can imagine that violating the hard cap will not convince anyone to sell their BTC for that fork.
But, if however whales choose to follow a particular quantum-safe algorithm softfork, that does not change the economics of the network, their economic voting matters, indeed.
The whales (and here I'm talking about both major holders and major companies in the Bitcoin ecosystem like CoinBase) will do whatever benefits them, and/or whatever they are ordered to do by their government.
As I said, the realistic path would probably be some change that benefits these whales, but if the political environment turned badly against them (say they were associated with a very unpopular former regime), they might just do whatever makes them lose the least amount of money and/or the least risk of prosecution.
Insofar as there is an economic "race" going on, the government's version would only need to be more valuable than (say) Monero is today, i.e. 1/200th of what BTC is worth. Why Monero? Because that's an example of a coin that is
outlawed heavily restricted in most western countries*. Hence the investor would choose between an outlawed fork and a legal one, and they would choose whatever leaves them with the most money.
(* I didn't know that Monero was actually legal still, just heavily restricted by major governments. Hence it could go far lower if it was outright banned for holding and trading. The point here is that government regulations and other actions can
drastically affect the price of an asset--plus or minus 99.9%. Insofar as that's the case, it allows the government to control such a market if they wanted to.
Freedom comes from the voting booth, or on the battlefield--not Github.
If you want to make sure your favorite product isn't messed around with by your government, then vote (or otherwise engage in the political process). That doesn't always work, but that's the sad reality. Anybody telling you there's some shortcut to freedom is lying to you (and probably trying to sell you something
).

This isn't a "the top is in" post. BTC probably bounces; it always has. The real question is the cycle after the institutions finish their rails: does Bitcoin get displaced, or just quietly ignored down to a few hundred nodes — like every pure network before it?

Honestly, what is the advantage of using a Bitcoin ATM? Since all of them are subjected to KYC compliance rules, and require you to give them information when it exceeds a certain amount (like $500), what's the point of paying a premium to an ATM for BTC when you can get it cheaper by going into a CEX or DEX?
This idea was fantastic until they were legally required to treat everyone a criminal.
It's basically obsolete piece of technology that people still holding on to. The rate used by these ATM are astonishingly high and the fee is astronomical.
Nobody actually need bitcoin ATM since everybody is owning a phone that allow them to access crypto market with significantly lower fees. Even if these two states bans bitcoin ATM it will affect nothing.

The CLARITY act actually stalled because the crypto industry itself turned against it. Brian Armstrong and other crypto players pulled their support earlier this year after the traditional banking lobby pushed for a stablecoin rewards ban.
Less about a partisan standoff and more about the bankers trying to block crypto competition.
The yield ban is really something and Coinbase is making serious bank from it and them pulling their support means they want to prevent from losing such huge revenue stream.
The bankers are pushing for yield ban to protect their deposit from outflowing and doing senate negotiation to close the GENIUS act loop hole. The bill went from harmless to very restrictive at this point.

I agree.
The advantages were there until we all started being treated like criminals. Now the only advantage is for the scammers manipulating grandmothers into sending them money. I wonder how these ATMs still even exist. I would have said they did because some people would pay for their privacy but we go back to the same Know Your Customer problem.
Nowadays these are machines to send money to scammer indians. That is pretty much it.
I think the only advantages for having that Bitcoin ATM is the convenience, but aside from that I think nothing because they ask more higher fees and people need to undergo with those processes mentioned.
If the government find out that this is been widely used for illegal matters or other fraudulent schemes, then will agree with them to take counter actions with those machine for safety of their people.

That is just the fact. If the proverb can change to “work harder and invest in things that are not affected by inflation,” it would have been better. People that still save in fiat are just wasting their energy because they will still pay taxes, get affected by inflation, and still lose the value of what they have worked harder for.
It’s very painful to see how the system is designed to make the poor poorer. The only chance left for them to escape is very slim, which is the main reason we see the poor like they are not ready to change their situation. How I wish I can create a way to teach all the poor how to escape the cycle, although you can never eradicate poverty in the world.

That is exactly what the new dimension toward wealth creation in today world where traditional patterns are failing to cope and survive with the economical challenges.
Is a true fact that asset creation, asset accumulation and technology is the driver of the present financial order and if an average Joe must be able to elevate himself out and above the middle class which is gradually fading cause the social and financial disparity now stand between poor and rich, leaning in the direction of digital asset and tech is the solution.

Bans never really work, that meaningless 13% of GDP figure proves people will use bitcoin regardless of what the law says. The IMF isn't worried about citizens, they're worried about losing control over capital flows.
Nepal would be better off regulating it properly than pretending a ban does anything but push activity underground. What can you say other than HFSP?
IMF will do everything possible to ensure that borrowers implement the provisions of the loan agreement. They don't care about the economic impact of these policies on the common man. In my country, they forced the government to sack workers and stop subsidizing some essential products. This led to massive downsizing of the public corporations and the poverty level increased.
Most countries are regulating the crypto industry to attract more investors and increase government revenue through taxes and licenses. Nepal's lender will not let that happen because they have other interests.

The problems with merchants and Bitcoin adoption are two:
- Capital gains tax: By law, most merchants have to pay capital gains tax on top of income tax.
- Accepting a different currency adds a lot of friction. There is very little to gain for a merchant by adopting an internet currency. If irreversible payments (for practical matters) is important, they can go with a stablecoin.
Taxes are not among the major problems with Bitcoin in my country as there is practically no taxes on Bitcoin. What stand as a major obstacle here is the volatility of Bitcoin which makes most people skeptical about accepting it and the few that does do no hesitate to convert to stablecoins. Majority of the people that hold own Bitcoin here are mostly holders who do not care about the volatility but are holding for long.

The illegal fork of the former Bitcoin codebase we're talking about here would certainly be tradable, but it would be vastly less liquid, and thus far less valuable.
The US government already controls the on and off ramps of most Bitcoin liquidity. I don't understand what the benefit is with attempting to "force" Bitcoin investors into buying a fork that might end up to be just another worthless one. From the government's perspective, since it surveils most high value Bitcoin transactions already, it stems to lose a lot more by meddling with the protocol, even if it were feasible in the first place. Changing the protocol is one of the most likely ways that Bitcoin fails, and if it does, the government loses the declared capital appreciation from all those bitcoin holdings.
Like I keep saying, the point of the OP is not
why a government like the USA would vote to change Bitcoin, or whether they might do that soon, but rather that it's completely possible and even plausible. There's nothing magic about Bitcoin that places it above the reach of laws.
All that said, to paint a possible scenario...
Imagine if the Major Players who collectively own a huge chunk of BTC and/or have custody of most of BTC figured out a scheme that would benefit themselves, and it required major changes to the Bitcoin core codebase. They would do what they've already been doing, and lobby Congress to pass a law saying that their proposed fork is "the real Bitcoin" and everything else is a fraud, and will be prosecuted as such.
And I've brought up the specific example of changing the architecture to a smaller, trusted set of nodes along with eliminating PoW, which would make the system scalable to handle all of the world's daily payments natively, which could vastly (as in, 100,000x) spread the usage of Bitcoin because everybody could use it for absolutely everything, not just investment. Hence the whales could believe their BTC would greatly increase in price, yielding them billions in gains--far outweighing the investment they made in political contributions. (Again, this is just a scenario that the Whales etc. might believe in, I'm not going to debate whether this would really expand BTC or not, etc.).
The combination of major holders shifting over, plus laws in (at least) the USA and probably lots of other places where the Whales would do the same lobbying, would instantly turn the new fork into the Bitcoin almost everybody uses, and the original fork akin to Monero.
Again, I'm not saying this will happen (although the more I write this the more likely it sounds!), but the point is that it absolutely
could happen, so let us please stop saying, "Bitcoin cannot be controlled by governments" because it absolutely can be.

This is what some countries do not know, government can regulate cryptocurrencies and generate tax from it. The crypto business that will be established in their country and the money generated through crypto taxes will add to Nepal GDP and economy. IMF know this, but they will not encourage the country to regulate cryptocurrencies.
If citizens want something, I do not know the reason the government of the country supposed not to give the citizens what they want..it is very clear that Nepal citizens want cryptocurrencies ban to be lifted.

Basically, he believes that the US government is God and can intervene in the global market to the extent that it can decide what is valuable and what not. By the same line of reasoning, how can you be sure that gold is durable and a good way to store your value, when the US government can confiscate it at any point in time and render it valueless? Historically, holding gold has been illegalized, and gold has been confiscated by all sorts of kings and governments; its value proposition hasn't changed nonetheless.
Nope, it's not valueless, nor is Bitcoin
even though it could be controlled by the US government if they felt like it.
Market value is determined by a bunch of things, but one of the biggest factors is
liquidity: something you can't sell (or can't easily sell) is worth far less than something that is easy to sell. A rare Van Gogh painting might be worth $100 million in a highly publicized auction, and yet that same painter--were it to be stolen, let us say--would trade for a tiny fraction of that on the black market because there are very few buyers.
The illegal fork of the former Bitcoin codebase we're talking about here would certainly be tradable, but it would be vastly less liquid, and thus far less valuable.
The real question we have to ask ourselves is why is this person so against the idea of Bitcoin? He's been a spirit of contradiction for over two years now. What's the motive?

Yea its a coincidence that Satoshi launched Bitcoin in 2009 and the halvings followed
after that on a 4 year cycle right in line with the World cup. So yea coincidentally the bear
market of the 4 year cycle falls around the WC.
Same as the Rugby World Cup follows the FIFA one at a time when the market should be
throwing off the grapple the Bears had previously.

I can't agree more, you pointed it as simply as it was possible. Earth has a lot of gold in it, which is to be discovered yet, but it does not change the fact that economically it is scarce due to the controlled supply.
By the way, you said we have infinite in the universe? Do you mean by having gold on other planets? I once heard there is an asteroid in space that could have more gold (or maybe it was diamond) in it than there is on the planet. I have heard a lot of stories too, but can we believe them? Do you?

Bitcoin and gold share similarities. Both are hard money and scarce. Both have proved to be storing your purchasing power overtime.
If you have 20k$ , would you buy gold or BTC? why? economics behind your choice. Keep in mind the volatility and variations of both
Personally if I have such amounts at my disposal probably as a discretionary income I would obviously be buying bitcoin, instead of buying some gold, I’m not saying gold is bad for business now, I think the volatility that is what makes bitcoin special, considering the price of bitcoin in the market now, I would obviously have to buy bitcoin, because you might be having a new ATH, you never can tell anyways, bitcoin is more affordable and you don’t have to carry bitcoin anywhere, you only carry bitcoin on your phone, while gold you have to carry it in a larger quantity of that amount.
Bitcoin is more sustainable to me in a long term investment.

Bitcoin restores the equality in terms of access to the best capital by every person with an Internet access. This might be left-leaning by some definitions. It is libertarian in my opinion, because capitalism is all about property rights, and Bitcoin is the epitome of property rights.
In reality, Bitcoin doesn't care at all about the "rights", it only guarantees and protects access to value. But it can work completely without the help of the legal system.
I agree that Bitcoin has a Libertarian nature though, but this does not make Bitcoin right-wing libertarian, see below. In my opinion it's "neutral libertarian".
Is capitalism (the means of production being property of individuals) left leaning? I don't think so. According to communism, property is owned by the State, and not by individuals. Is leftism a little bit of both capitalism and communism? Never truly understood what leftism and rightism is, to be frank.
"Left-leaning" means basically that every human being is treated equally (egalitarianism).
Capitalism (and of course also Libertarianism or economic Liberalism) can be leftist if everybody tends to get similar access to goods and means of production, even if this means that they have to work for it (but there are no disproportionate difficulties for a social group to access wealth, like in most societies).
If there are elitist structures, i.e. some groups of people (due to religion, ancestry or "caste"/"aristocracy" but also family wealth) are getting disproportional advantages then a system is right-leaning for me. This can be also the case with Libertarianism if only some liberties are conceded, and these just benefit a specific group disproportionally.
Bitcoin does not really conced this kind of elitist advantages, although you could argue that early adopters are a group which is benefitted disproportionally, but that is not defined by Satoshi's code, but by the market structure.
The State has not that much to do with the left/right discussion. Historically many Leftist parties and politicians have sought to use the State and its monopoly of violence to
enforce equality or some form of pseudo-equality where a caste of bureaucrats got advantages (and thus these systems are not really egalitarian). On the other hand, there are leftists like Anarcho-communists ("left wing libertarians") who are as anti-State as "Capitalist" Libertarians.
